Surfing Waves

I've been looking to add another board to the quiver, and Ive been thinking about a fat shortboard.

I'm a big lad, no big wave hero, and regularly surf south coast mush, and I love riding my fish, but sometimes it can be a bit too flat. I also love my shortboard, but dont really enjoy it unless conditions are perfect

So a combination of the two, I was thinking about a fat shortboard, or an egg/flying saucer (whatever you want to call it) type shape.

Something like this...




...with more rocker and slimmer rails than a fish, and a thruster fin set up (although I chop and change set ups so often, that'd be temporary)


So opinions on this type of board please!


(From the experienced people, preferably, I dont need to be told its a short board for a 6ft fella!! )

I have decided to make a 6'8" x 21.5" by 2.75" single fin egg for my next board. I have decided that it would handle the mush pretty well, and with a relatively low rocker it would give me enough speed for the small, powerless waves.

I didn't like the idea of eggs for a long time. then I went out on my 8' board from the 60's, and loved the ride, the feel, and how long of a ride I could get on the powerless, nothing, closeout waves. but I was upset in the amount of pearling I was getting, and I was told that shorter boards fit the curve of small waves much better than big boards. So it seems it would be a good fit.

I am also not a small guy, 5'11", 175, and not the strongest paddler due to lack of swimming and surfing. I haven't been too impressed with my thruster, but I think I would really love it if I had the right conditions. I have also not tried a proper fish, but I would probably like it.

Yeah, the fish's wide shape together with low rocker means its very skatey, which is great on small or gutless waves, but struggles on steeper sections. Kinda like you're 'on' the wave rather than 'in' it... if you get what I mean

gothcha. but then again, the low rocker is one of the key componets to what makes the fish sucessful in small gutless waves.....I guess if you have a pretty wide and thick board you can still pull it off with a more accellerated (sp) rocker.

yeah, and on the right day (or rather, a gutless small day) the fish is king, and I love it
But Im looking for something else for steeper sections. And this is an addition to the quiver, not a replacement
