Boards can often be covered on house insurance, so assuming you (or mum n' dad, whoever) have got some, check that and see whether you're covered or whether you can add them on :D

Most places cover theft/damage but not while you're using them - so some creative claiming is required if you snap one while you're surfing

The insurance that BSA offers is third party cover.

IE - if you hit someone with your board whilst out surfing then the insurance company will cover their medical bills etc etc.

It is worth putting your surfboard as a "named article" on your insurance policy. It is also important to undertsand that if your board gets stolen, you must be able to proves that you took reasonable care to secure it or the company will not pay out.

Eg - if you leave it outside your tent or on the beach and it gets nicked then they will not payout. Even if it is strapepd to your roof with tie-downs there is not really any "security" there.

speaking of getting your board knicked from your car, is there a way to lock it to your roof rack??

How about these?

They'll not stop someone who really wants to take the board, but it'll stop the opportunist scum, and damage the board in the process which might put them off :?

Yeah, I've seen a couple of other locking styles, but I can't recall the web address...
