Hi all, I'm a competent surfer, I've surfed on and off over 10 years, just got fully back Into it. I'm around 5ft10- 11 and about 67kg, I brought a hybrid semi performance board,it's 6ft 20 inch wide and 2 5/8 thick. I haven't taken it out in anything over 3ft yet. But I'm struggling to manuover it. Does anyone think that 32.5L is too bouyant for me? When I try and dig the rail it feel like I'm on a trampoline n it's bouncing me back up. I've rode boards fr 5ft 4 up to 6ft 5. (I've never been able to surf long boards or mini mals NEVER been able) I learnt to surf out the back on like a 6ft4. I only got the vessel dark horse at 6ft 32.5l cuz I'm getting older and not as fit. But did I make a major mistake?? I'm thinking I should have got a 5ft 8 but too late now. N I just need someone to make me feel better bout wasting $650 lol but honestly should I be able to carve/rip it up on a baord with say 2 - 5 more litres than I actually require??? And also I'm using thruster large fins (which was a mistake I asked for medium) sorry bout my life long story!

I am not the board person so hang on for someone else to comment but if you actually are a competent surfer you should be able to ride any board by my definition of competent. Only other thing I have to say is hang on to the board and some day you may find it useful.

All good bro, it's the fins, I need smaller fins to accommodate my weight. And when I say competent surfer, I mean I can duck dive, I can catch over head waves and surf down the line without wiping out, but I can't get vertical unfortunately but I just need to train more

"The Vessel Dark Horse is a performance shortboard with a wider profile and tailored for smaller days or for surfers who simply want a little more paddle power.

I would think one of the problems is with the wider profile and not competent on being fully on the tail ( "but I can't get vertical unfortunately but I just need to train more" ), you trying to push down the widest fattest thickest most bouyant part of the board, makes it harder to turn or set the rail. If you learn to step back more, you can then turn off the thinner harder edge of the rail/tail. Having a too large fin template setup, agreed could be part of it, but I think with the right technique you could still turn it.

"I've never been able to surf long boards or mini mals NEVER been able." If you learned early on the basics on how to turn a board by surfing long(er) boards, you wouldn't have the difficulties you are having currently.

Btw, I am 5'3" and about 57kg and I can turn my board of 63 liters
