nose broke help

i have an epoxy shortboard and the nose broke, about 3 inches. i grabbed the nose, but im not sure if i can fix it. do surfshops to repairs to put it back on or build a new nose? i dont want to go in there and have them laugh at me, i just got my board back from the place a few weeks ago because of a huge ding across the belly. heres a pic.

can that be repaired, and if so, how?

duno about a surftech...

try, tacking the nose back on with some straight EPOXY resin, and trying to get it to look right, and if it does, glass over it with like three layers of 6 a side also with EPOXY.

how'd you break it anyway?

there's a site out there somewhere that i've stumbled over a bunch, epoxy fixer lady something or another. she does a lotta vacuum bagging on epoxy, but it might not be necessary.

she's got a huge section on epoxy repair, if you are up to it. if not, then you can still get a whole bunch of knowledge on what the guys in the shop will be doing

i was surfing at a shorebreak. here its all reef or shorebreak. i suppose the board went down nose first into the sand.

the big one in the middle was after dropping in doing a bottom turn, right onto a rock at a good speed. i flew off my board like when youre going down a hill on skateboard and hit a pebble or stick with the front wheels.

funny thing is i always mess my board up when the surf is flat and i get desperate and surf shorebreaks and rocky areas that have windswells. ive never damaged my board surfing big waves.

im not too worried about the vaccum seal, mines was lost a long time ago.

just to get the skin on in the first place, it didn't erally have a vaccuume inside of it, just vacuum pressure was used to keep the skin on until it cured.

you just gotta keep it from soaking up water.

and if you could get a pic of like the layersand stuff, like stick th ecamera right infront of it, tha'd be neat.

surftechs are pretty tricky lookin in my opinion. so what are they really? the broken pieces never look like foam in the middle, or fiberglass layers

ooh the gore. ot looked like 4 layers. im no surfboard anatomy expert but heres a try since the pic is a blur.
1 outer mnm like shell
2. hard epoxy sheet thing
3. spongy hard ccrystal thing
4. foam

You (or the shop) should be able to fix it. Since you don't really ride on the nose it's not that big a deal.
There was an article in Surfing (the mag.) recently (not sure what month) about putting the nose back on (however, it was for a foam and glass board).

Ups! sorry for the board... I usually broke my board too and I always carry it to the shaper and he cures my baby perfectly! (and really cheap!)

i dont hate it, the name was in response to all these londoners wishing they lived here. id much rather live in a place with culture as such like london, newyork, sanfrancisco, etc. hawaii has beautiful landscapes but other than that its boring. the people are very egocentric. we have a small art scene and it seems like everything revolves around the tourist industry. very commercial like. i like nyc a lot. and its completely normal for people my age who have grown up here to want to leave. something about the small stuck on an island atmosphere, or maybe the constant heat... oahu has about a million people on it, but you run into the same faces over and over. for some reason theres a bit of hopelessness that accompanies it. 9 out of 10 of people i know want to leave or have already done so. oddly, most to portland oregon, or nyc.

if you care about your board, a repair like that, if it were me, I would take it to a reputable local shop. bring the piece, I have heard of people reattaching broken noses and such. - definately wouldnt attempt something like that on my own though. i got a used board, fiberglass, that had the nose broken off, not like that though, only like an inch or so, and i brought it to a shop and they re-build a while new nose on there. was pointy and good as new and only cost me $20. repairs like that usually run 40-60 round here anyways though, just to give you an idea. good luck with it.

wow, I see it almost the opposite way. i dont really like cities, since i would end up living in the suburbs, which has no really great things in my opinion. where i live now, is the suburbs of a not really big city, and all it is is stuck up come-heres that screwed up the rural country. too crowded and no land to hunt. too spread out to be able to walk/skate everywhere(or anywhere at all). all there is is houses.

I guess its really all about what people have been exposed to thus far in their lives. I see where your comin from

not native at all. my family's from sanfrancisco. a lot of the polynesians here hate whites.
honolulu is a huge city. here ill post a few of the cityish pics i have... not much though since i dont take pics of the city, since our city is nothing compared to nyc and such, i feel its more appropriate to concentrate on the ocean and mountains. here you cant skate since we dont have sidewalks in the suburbs in town, only downtown and waikiki. roads are full of potholes. also, almost wherever you go requires you going up some part of a mountain. i probably wouldnt like where you are either. i dont really like suburbs unless its rural with big northwestern forests and a city not far away.

HawaiiSux...I think you are wrong. For the most part people on this Island are friendly and very welcoming. I actually disagree that everything surrounds tourism. Yes a large part has to do with tourism since it is a major part of the total revenue for the state etc. but most tourists stay in Waikiki, and then mostly outside their hotels. In the weekends I can go to a beach and have it all by myself...and yes there is a break there...
I agree that the cultural scene is not too developed, but the close to nature experiences more than weighs up for it (surfing, kiting, scuba diving, hiking etc.) ....and there is always the art walk. It is a pity that there are so few nice places to go out (most bars have TV's in them). I am starved for good concerts though...but otherwise..there are waves here all year, and the climate is very pleasant.

View from Pillboxes in Lanikai..and yes there is surf both between the Mokuluas and on the left hand side. The break depends on the size of the Waves...the smaller the waves..the closer to flat island. I like it there...
