Surfing big waves is...

...erm f scarey  !

I just got back from a week in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands and rode the biggest waves I've ever ridden. I was xxxxx scared paddling out and even more when the clean up sets came thru. But after talking myself out of paddling straight back in I managed to get one and was still alive so decided it wasn't so bad after all - but never the less a very humbling experience.
I reckon it was at least double overhead on the sets and powerfull as breaking on shallow reef - I have a few shots of me riding a few of the smaller waves that day.

Now I know how big and scarey it was out there but looking at these photos it looks like I'm just being a big wuss, so now when I see photos of people riding waves that still look big in the photo I now have a massive big greater respect for these surfers!

Cheers for the kind words DBBB, and I managed to avoid hitting the reef Tomcat erm possibly due to my scared shitless of the shallow water starfish wipeouts! - it was a good trip tho :D

A few more shots of the same sesh, but better surfers than me, taken by my chick.

Dopey I can relate to your "take chances" as none of the drops I took looked 'nice' and so if I used my normal take off routine I probs would not have got any waves. I was having to evaluate all the pros and cons before dropping in and then trusting my evaluation even tho it felt iffy and it paid off cos I loved it! But yeah you have to make a dicision and then just go for it.

I know what people mean more now about being alone in the water when its bigger, as whilst there were 15 people in the water I didn't know any of them or even understand what they were saying as I don't speak spanish, so I did feel very alone and when a couple of ausssies got in for half an hour even tho I didn't talk to them it lifted my spirit just to hear people talking and understanding them.

I really did like the buz I got riding those waves tho, I mean normally I do get a buz if I pull a good move on smaller waves but on those bigger ones I just got a buz taking off and straightlining for the shoulder! I want more :D .

Broosta - where were you in Fuerteventura?

I'm heading over there in May and was looking for some good breaks.

Also, did you take your own board or rent one? If you rented, where!?

Cheers

Sinista

Hi Sinister, I was in Correlejo in the north, and I mainly surfed Glass Beach on the north east coast and then a couple of times at Harbour Wall on the north-ish coast and then once at Cotillo on the west coast.
I took my own boards (2) in the end but saw that several of the surf shops in Correlejo hire boards - customs, pop-outs and foamies.

CheeZee have you tried refreshing screen a few times dude?

Just watched OP Pro live - sick 8) ! Pancho won, Fanning 2nd, Raoni 3rd and Brett Simpson 4th.

Tried to get them to announce a shout out to Surfing Waves Forum but they didn't :( final too exciting :D !
