The Nile is Egypt & brings life to the desert, a magnificent river, but it's also the sewer for 1/2 of Africa, not the best place to go for a swim. Make sure your Cholera & Typhoid jabs are up to date and only swim in fast moving currents & you could be ok. At least there's no crocs downstream of the Aswan dam anymore!

NB I forget the exact distance, maybe 5 miles, but the med is freshwater for miles out from the Nile due to the quantity of water coming out.

Morocco may be a better choice for a North African adventure - plenty of good atlantic surf and tons of cultural stuff in the imperial cities.
