Broken Hand Crushing my Stoke! Advice for getting back in?

I have multiple fractures in the second metacarpal bone of my left hand -- thankfully not the dominant hand! This is the bone on the index finger on the back of the palm. Not surprisingly (for me), this was a skating injury-- nothing related to surfing. The orthopedist tells me it will be 6 to 8 weeks using a splint. Of course I'm unable to do basic surfing techniques such as paddling and popping.up, let alone pick up a long board, since I can't put any weight on my left hand. Has anyone out there had a similar injury or have recommendations for getting strong prior to getting back in the water? I'm about 3 weeks in can't take much more of this!

Get a pair of short fins ( the ones for your feet not the bottom of your board ) with a heel strap, not heel cup, and go bodysurf. It will teach you about the "wave", timing, positioning, be patient and calm. You can just extend your right hand and leave your left injured hand back to force you not to paddle stroke with it.

Wow, that's an excellent thought that really hadn't occurred to me! Should allow getting back in without too much risk of further injury. Appreciate the sound advice!
