Beginner or hero in the line-up?

Postby drowningbitbybit » Wed Oct 26, 2005 11:38 am

So, a lot of us chat on here all day instead of working, get to know each other a bit, but sadly I've never seen anyone here surf :?
So I was just wondering - what kind of people are here chatting? How good are you? :D

0 - Never surfed.
1 - I can catch waves, but cant stand up.
2 - I can catch waves, stand up, then head for the shore (or fall off).
3 - I’m up and riding, can turn a bit.
4 - I’m surfing unbroken waves now!
5 - I’m on the face of the wave now! Not sure what to do next though!
6 - I’m out back, catching the waves, surfing okay, pulling off some maneouvres.
7 - I’m bashing it off the lip, pulling floaters, cutting back!
8 - I’m pulling 360 airs then going through the back door into the tube.
9 - I’m Kelly Slater.
10 - I eat Kelly for breakfast.

Pick a number - and tell us why! :D

I'm putting myself at about 6, 7 on a good day 8)

Still sometimes feel like a 2 or a 3 though on a bad day or in BIG surf!

It's kind of hard to pick just one number.
I feel that I'm in the 3, 4 zone and getting close to the 5, if that makes any sense.
Riding a 6'6" and I haven't been surfing a real long time. I still need to really concentrate on catching the wave, getting up, staying low and turning the board in the direction I want to go...

1-2  But in my defense i've never surfed on a regular basis. All that is about to change though. In less than two weeks time i will have broken up from uni for the summer and be down in Mt Maunganui, on and off for the summer so will have at least a month of surfing solidly, i would like to progress to a 3 before i leave NZ this year. Thats my hope 8)

1,2. Weather's getting cold and I'm going to have to choose between eating or buying a wetsuit.

i guess i would rate my self about a 6, maybe a five. somedays do feel like a 1 :?

do the floaters have to be on a tubing wave or a broken one?

i really have only had like 2 or 3 barrels, ultra short ones....i just never can hit it when the winds are off shore. i guess a large part of that is the fact that nobody in my family wants to go to the beach when the weather is crappy, of course thats strangely when the waves are good around here.

7.
This scale is hard to work with as there are considerable increments between 7-8 not mentioned.

Well, unfortunately, I am not in a possition to worry about the larger increments between 7 & 8 :P

So for now I will be happy with my 3 or 4 on a good day.

1,2... Total newbie but hoping to improve fast.

Loads of exercising at the moment to get some strength back.

Too much of that nice black stuff the last couple of years...

7 + barrels + throwing the tail a bit :D.

Moves I'm always going for but not yet pulled are: 360s, reverses and small airs.
I'm always just trying to go harder and faster really on everything.
360 airs I'm not even thinking about!

6-7 + Barrels (albeit small short ones, but that's cos of the conditions)

Does Kelly Slater's girlfriend automatically get a 10 then????
