Uncle Jaffa‘s surf activities and social .

Postby jaffa1949 » Tue Sep 22, 2020 6:17 pm

The weekend before last elongated by a Thursday arrival , I was privileged to spend time with German Forumite and surfer Oldie.

We converse over the laws of nature and North Sea surfing, it is certainly not the promised land of endless barrels and we talked non stop, on the Thursday toured cultural and culinary delights, German Beer, Curry wurst , Rhine River sunset beer o‘clock , we went to the Neandertal Museum and met people older than me who I might have played rugby against, but as one of my interests is paleo anthropology this old fossil felt right at home there and also at Oldie‘s home there was much discussion around a laden table.
Outside BBQ Aussie style ,but evidentially German style too.

We dissolved any stereotypes we might have of one another, and I am sure a strong friendship formed family to,family.

Saturday we drove to Scheveningen in Holland to surf the North Sea swells, half metre at 6 seconds with a 5seconds and a 7 seconds running over or under each other, consider too that the 7000 windsurfers were striving. for these waves in their separate areas, it was a challenge.

You will notice on the horizon the plague cruise ships moored, maybe they will rust and sink making an offshore surf reef!

Because often hospitality of Oldie I was able to add the North Sea Holland as another surf destination .
Surprisingly the water was pleasantly warm and surprise surprise, through the chaos of the waves I was able to stand up. first time in a long time, :woot:

The pier at the other end of Scheveningen you can Bungey jump right into the take off zone and have a Hollandisch sunset beer.

Next day to another Northsea surf spot towards Belgium and Oldie explained this was a deteriorating surf quality zone and he knows his forecast stuff , it was!
So we watched the surfschools and had a great lunch, then drove back to Germany, It is obvious how surf blessed the coast of Australia, the USA and tropic islands are, from the southern end of the English Channel to southern Spain and Portugal the odds favour the surfer more and more.
Full respect to any Mid European land locked surfer who endures so much to get to reasonable waves.
I have a place for Oldie and his family to come and experience our local river wave.
hopefully Spring and post virus

Meanwhile memories of Beer o‘clock on the Rhine

So much thanks to Oldie and his family and Jimmy the spaniel for his awesome hippo wrestling during surf videos

Recommendation ´; try and meet up with like minded others in the forum, it will be worth it :D :D

It was a privilege and joy to have Jaffa here - we had lots of inspiring discussions and fun! Shitty waves as always on the North Sea, so that was a good demonstration of the harsh reality ;-). I can only recommend offline exchange between forumites where possible.! We were lucky - one day after our trip North and South Netherlands was declared risk zone for COVID-19 by GY with mandatory testing and quarantine until a negative result - puh.

Same here. As someone who has really enjoyed and found incredibly useful reading Jaffa's advice on wet season Bali, especially for beginner-intermediate surfers, this was really cool to see and read.

Makes me feel less bad about being landlocked right now too.
Stay safe and enjoy the beer everyone!

Thanks TeeBee and welcome, part of my intent is to help and encourage people to become better surfers and better people in surfing and appreciate the cultures they surf in!.
Nice easy stuff to do and very rewarding! Oldie and his family were great to stay with and went out of their way to really show me their environment, surfing through their city on electric scooters, going to a paleo archeological museum and to beaches in Holland, , my family has been extended!

Thanks Jaffa, this is incredible and inspiring to hear in these times!
As well, I know "Eurosurfers" cop a lot of abuse in Bali for reasons I haven't *always* understood vis-a-vis others, but certainly a new found respect now that I've had a better look at surf conditions in Holland.
Thanks again Jaffa!

Tee Bee, I’m actually an Aussie , my life choices now mean I live in Austria, in the middle of Europe!
Bali and indonesia has been my seasonal playground since about 1979,
Uncrowded at first then sadly overwhelmed, and eventually with European surfers the great proportion being unskilled and unschooled in critical wave etiquette . Drop ins throwing boards, sitting in the wave track, , not willfully but through sheer ignorance enmass.
Catch cries of “the ocean belongs to everyone” when confronted about their efforts and with scrambled views of priority and wave sharing.
Australians in Indonesia could be arrogant and aggressive in regards to waves but they often had to rescue hapless European surfers.

A for instance, The Bali hub of Kuta beach can go from pleasant learning style waves to life threatening on the turn of the tide or an epic swell from Antarctica within half an hour, severe risk to those who lack survival skills.
That is roughly what brings the prejudice , which is also applied to any dimbo who wants to go beyond a surf school cause it looks easy

I am guilty of telling people to go in, because I know within a short time I will mostly have to rescue them!

Thanks Jaffa! Apologies, missed this post! I know exactly what you mean. Even in the relatively short amount of time - roughly 12 years - I've visited the archipelago, the relentless influx of European learners, as well as Russian and Korean, has been breathtaking and at times distressing.
Regarding Kuta, the prejudice makes sense from school swarm to "this looks easy, I can do this." I've been caught out there more than once by rapidly shifting conditions (eyes on those distant reefs, they can be a life saving early warning), but in recent years have pulled out more than a few learners from dicey situations.
Thanks again Jaffa! Merry Christmas to you and yours and all the best for the New Year! Always curious to hear about those earlier times and even into the 1990s/early 2000s about what Indo was like. Any old threads you have, don't hesitate to point them out! Take care!
