Bald is beauti.....no it's a burn magnet

Jokes aside, I'm losing more of my hair - on my head that is- as I'm getting older. Before now I had enough hair to make it impractical to apply suncreen to my dome. Almost all of it ended up in hair and not on my scalp. So I ended up buying and have been wearing one of those Dakine bucket hats with a strap. Now I'm in the fortunate position to have enough baldness that I can actually apply sunscreen. I was wondering what some of my fellow baldies are doing out there are doing in terms of sunscreen for your bald head? I already know that anything other than natural sunblock with zinc or titanium dioxide will burn the hell out of my eyes. I have been using the Wavehunters zinc stick for my face and nose, but the stuff is crazy expensive and would get used up quick if I applied it to my dome. One obvious answer is to continue to wear the hat. But sometimes I would like to ditch the hat without my head getting smoked from the sun. I thought of a poor man's way to apply zink to my head would use Desitin daiper rash cream. Has anyone had any luck doing that? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Cheers!

Don't use diaper cream, even though it has zinc oxide in it, you are risking that it doesnt have the right type, concentration, processing and other ingredients. https://thebeautybrains.com/2017/07/can ... isode-162/

Other than a hat, you can try a 'buff' or a headscarf (or perhaps a lifesaver cap?) if you dont like the hat (less annoying but probably less likely to stay on your head) - obviously the hat is always going to the the best option.

There are some sunscreens that in my experience do not burn the eyes - after some experimentation I now use Island Tribe gel. As long as you put it on about 10 minutes before you go in, I have no eye issues. I am sure there are others that have the same benefits - google around and get some recommendations from other surfers.

Finally, you can get 'invisible zinc' - although in my experience its not actually invisible, it still has a slight white sheen. But its an option

Or just embrace it and get some coloured zinc and paint some nice pictures on your head, your fav sporting team colours or something...

Not bald personally but am Australian, so protecting myself from the sun is important!

maybe Jaffa.... :D :D

Son of Jaffa demonstrates another style a Gath helmet.... as a kneeboarder he is subject to impacts at head level from drop ins so double benefit.

I find the baseball type cap with ear and neck flaps really good, the bucket hat has issues duck diving or turtle rolling and neck strain when the bucket washes off and acts as sea anchor with the cord around your neck!

Of course in tropical sun zones out of the surf there are fashion dictates to meet!

I also have used a thin layer of Desitin diaper rash cream before - it works surprisingly well and doesn't burn my eyes.

While not useful when trying to get a cab, in the surf melanin is definitely my friend.

A sadly amusing observation from Indonesia and south through Australia is how many European and particularly English tourists are so sun unaware they become the zombie lobster backs unable to move comfortably because of near terminal sunburn
Aussie endure the sun but have the highest per capita skin cancer rates :!:
