Covid19 Surfing Restrictions

Postby BoMan » Mon Mar 23, 2020 2:56 am

It looks like surfing will soon be restricted in California and with good reason. What's going on in your area?

On Saturday, Marin County's coastal communities saw an unusually large influx of visitors from around the Bay Area. A photo published to the Marin County Sheriff's Office Twitter account Saturday showed a line of cars attempting to access an area near Dillon's Beach.

The sheriff's office said the visitors created traffic congestion, which interferes with first responders' ability to handle emergencies. In addition, state and county park parking lots and bathrooms are closed due to the shelter in place order, adding to further congestion and creating problems with sanitation.

Local residents we're upset and put up signs asking people to go home.

So far no restrictions on surfing but there are restrictions for beach parks however locals are exempted
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

As of tomorrow on Oahu, everyone, except for essential workers, must remain in their homes after 4:30pm.
All parks are closed including Waikiki beach and there are NO LIFEGUARDS.

There are reduced amounts of lifeguards here. But it doesn't matter where I surf since it is a lifeguardless beach. There are however some apparently homeless people who might be able to help

Hey all of our forumites, look at what you need to do, I am here in Austria, with Italy going bonkers with the virus infections and deaths epic.
Austria is in total lockdown , 65 and over stay in house one family member can shop for essentials , pharmacy, medical and food . All food production continues as possible, the supermarkets are stocked, some items are harder to find but are hardly essential
Police patrol to check whether people out have suitable reasons. Severe fines.
The reality is that 65 and over and chronic disease sufferers if they get corona virus are likely to be triaged as not treatable and medical resources used for those more likely to survive.

Some countries are not taking the disease seriously as are some of my friends, knowing the health and behaviours of some I have a clinical idea of who will survive.

Please do what is advised, I want to continue these conversations!

Haven't surfed in 3 weeks or so. Psychologically prepared to not surf for another 1-2 months...

Kauai has a curfew of 9 pm to 5 am. so no surf during those hours. Can you tell our mayor surfs? When they came out with this I mentioned to anyone who would listen that I have been under this curfew for years

I'm lucky that there are beaches with next to zero people/surfers this time of year. I'm going out in the morning and I'll be surprised to see more than 3 people all day at a distance.

The facilities are closed but the waves are open for business.

here is our mayors order http://www.kauai.gov/Portals/0/Civil_Defense/Emergency%20Proclamations/Mayor%27s%20Emergency%20Rule%20%235_20200324.pdf
It says This rule incorporates and implements the Third Supplementary Proclamation throughout the County of Kauai, and establishes further guidance and definitions for implementation, particularly with regard to exemption classifications set forth by the Governor. The Mayor incorporates the Governor's Rules with the over-arching goal of limiting as much movement as possible on island with four (4) goals in mind concerning essential activities:
A. OBTAINING NECESSARY SUPPLIES AND SERVICES for family or household members and pets, such as groceries, food, and supplies for household consumption and use, supplies and equipment needed to work from home, and products necessary to maintain safety, sanitation and essential maintenance of the home or residence.
B. ENGAGING IN ACTIVITIES ESSENTIAL FOR THE HEAL TH AND SAFETY of family, household members and pets, including things such as seeking medical or behavioral health or emergency services and obtaining medical supplies or medication.
C. Caring for a family member friends or a pet in another household or residence, and to transport a family member friend or pet to essential health and safety activities and to obtain necessary supplies and services.
D. Engaging in outdoor exercise activities such as walking hiking surfing running or biking but only if appropriate social distancing practices are used.

Went down the South West with the idea of staying a month or more in our tourer, a lot had the same idea, woolacombe was rammed over the weekend along with other popular places, so the lock down was anouced and all campsites closed, was weird on Monday walking Cody at the beach, perfect 3 4 ft peeling waves, gentle off shore sunny day with only about four out on a two miles beach, I didn't have the heart to get in knowing I was heading back home the following morning.

Not happy about it but I've decided not to surf or skate until "the curve flattens." It would be just my luck to get hurt and suffer the shame of getting patched up while others are dying. My dog will get extra walks!

San Diego county beaches were closed down a couple days ago, and LA county beaches were closed down yesterday.

The days I mentioned were when all beach access/activity was prohibited and enforceable by law. So anyone you see on the cams now is breaking the rules.

For a few days prior, in Los Angeles they had only closed parking lots, bathrooms, etc. but beach activities such as surfing were still allowed as long as you practiced safe social distancing.

Practically speaking the beaches are a scarce resource, and unfortunately crowd dynamics were going to make safe beach going difficult IMO even if most people are trying to be safe.

I think the city and law enforcement has a lot more things to worry about than crowd control, which is why they unfortunately had to shut down the beaches and parks. If at this point you have small numbers of stragglers here and there, they’re less concerned about that as the main goal is to stop virus spreading. If they see a significant amount of surfers or beach goers anywhere, I think then they’ll send some cops out there to empty it.

In Australia, Fraser Coast Regional Council has filled one of its popular skate parks with sand to stop people ignoring new social distancing rules to slow the spread of the coronavirus

“With schools moving to pupil-free days next week, it is imperative parents take responsibility for their children,” they wrote on Facebook.

I'm on the gulf coast of Florida and they are still surfing here, though not as many by far. Just the die hards. There appears to be a few stragglers still out on the east coast too in places like New Smyrna Beach. The beaches are closed but are still letting people surf since it's not technically "on the beach". I guess when the occasional swell does hit in Florida, it's go all out next to the matter what!

Just practicing for when isolation rules lift, stay home stay safe, don’t prolong the problem by breaking restrictions.
