As I mentioned in my recent board advice thread, I'm doing a podcast with a buddy where we're essentially trying to go from beginner to barreled in 1 year. We know there's very little chance, but we thought it would be a great way to advance our surfing and a fun project to log the journey.

Would love everyone's thoughts. Would especially love advice on anything you hear that we're doing wrong and could better help us reach our goal.

could be good. I'm not clicking a link from someone that hasn't been involved in this forum for a while. Kinda careful about potential cyber spams / hacks / viruses

I listened to your podcast. It was interesting to me. Good patter. I find it interesting what everyone goes through learning to surf. It varies so widely. There is a chance that you may get tubed since luck plays a part in getting tubed. If you know what you are doing and surf the right waves it makes it much more likely that you will get tubed but you may accidentally get tubed, it happens. Before I honestly tried to learn to surf my brother had a surfboard that was a 5'2" board which was really short for a board back then, they called it a potato chip board. Anyway he loaned it to me and I was paipo boarding at the same spot, a spot that I was very familiar with paipo boarding (body boarding). It took me about 20 or 30 minutes to figure out where I should be lining up for the waves with that board and then I caught a wave and popped up into a low crouch and got tubed on the very first wave I caught. It was very wet and I couldn't see but there was another surfer paddling out and he told me I was tubed. It kind of felt like it but because there was a lot of water in my eyes I couldn't tell, however i had been tubed many times paipo boarding at that very spot before so I knew the waves. Anyway it sounds like you are having fun which is the main thing. Limiting to your quest would be the amount of hours you can put in riding waves. Obviously if you paddle out and don't catch any waves you won't get tubed but the more the better your chances. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for listening! I think we'll need a ton of luck to achieve our goal. If it goes on for a few years, I think it's still interesting to folks how beginners progress in surfing. Or how it is transitioning from a longboard to a shortboard. We also might go to the extreme of making a trip to Indo or central america to get that "goldilocks" balance of size and room you mentioned in another thread.

All that being said, it's only been 1.5 months and we're already progressing and having an absolute blast!

Understood. Search "Barrel Patrol" on iTunes or Spotify if you want to check it out. No worries if not though!
