East coast surfer in CA

I'm visiting family in Ventura ca and just caught a glimpse of the beach. Haven't been out yet. Where I'm from if the waves are over knee high it's a good day. Here they look like small houses! I really want to get out there but that may be a bit much for me. Looks awesome, hopefully pics to come!

So the guy at the surf shop told me to come today at 2. He said the tide would be right and the wind and it should be good.
Time in the water this vacation = 0 hours.

SnakePlissken,
some quick notes.
1) sometimes the photos go sideways and you can't help it
2) happy to know you are nearby
3) If Rincon is too big or you're not experienced enough to surf there among very experienced regional surfers, then try nearby breaks named C Street (right in VENT), Emma Woods State Beach, and Mondos (both on old Pacific Coast Highway 1). I enjoy all 3, but Emma Woods requires stamina due to stronger currents

Now for some good local eats:
1) best hole-in-the-wall Mexican in VENT (breakfast especially great): Evita's Mexican Cafe, 3868 E Main St
2) best sea food & clam bar in VENT (go early for lunch or dinner to beat crowd): Brophy Brothers, 1559 Spinnaker Dr

Dang if I had known there was a fellow member I would have contacted you.

I believe we went to c street, I think I just got some unlucky days. We did find a good looking spot at Marina park where some guys were getting awesome rides, but I decided to pass. I would have to drive to rent a board and that would mean driving back to the shop with a wet surfboard in my grandmother in laws car. Plus it was definitely an expert level break because the waves were right next to the breakwater, I'm sure your familiar. I would have tried it though.

We ate at Pepe's, frikin awesome carne asada fries! I miss living on the west coast. The east coast doesn't even know what Mexican food is. They don't have carne asada they have square beef. Really there isn't food like that on the east coast, that's my favorite thing about visiting Cali.

SnakePlissken,
sounds like you had some fun (anyway)! You found Pepe's, too. (Pepe's used to be legendary, was sold by hombre that made it that way, and now it's hit or miss. Sounds like you "hit it" and that's good for your sake.)

Now you know, there's a fellow Surfing Waves forum member hereabouts. We'll get together next time!

P.S. The annual Rincon Classic surf contest is coming. Waiting and first potential competition date is 18 JAN 2020! I'm thinking more about this gem than Christmas. It's that much fun!

Ya man, next time I'm there we will hit some waves for sure.

My wife grew up in Ventura so she knew all the good hole in the wall places to eat.
Thanks bro

Dude, we have a huge Mexican population up here in RI, the Mexican food is killer! I’ve owned a home in MX since 2005 and loved Mexican food my whole life, so I know a bit about it... If you’re ever up in RI I’ll take you to one of our little gems, hopefully after a session!

Tom, is the cuisine in Yucatan similar to Oaxacan Cuisine? All those mole's and mezcals in Oaxaca! Gotta know, have you ever eaten chapulines (like people do in Oaxaca)? I want to try this! I think I would like them.

A very successful Santa Barbara restaurateur is opening another quality Mexican restaurant. I'll try it soon. See more here:

Lettuce on nachos is taco salad hahahaha! Yucatán cuisine is not like much of mainland MX food, in fact the style here in RI is more mainland than Yucatán for sure. Never had chapulines, but I’ll be sure to try them the next time I see them on a menu!

It does look like it is a bad day with someone kite surfing. Seems like quite a bit of windchop.

Banz had the best mexican food in SB with Bill but then got a little sick the next day.

I can't wait to get back to CA next week!

SnakeP: BaNZ means with billie (Me! Not Bill).

Hey, BaNZ! Looking forward to seeing you soon. We gotta eat some California King Crab down at the crab shack. I've got more propane. So, we can steam some Red Rock crab in the back garden. I'm ready.
