Surfing Waves

I need help with Bottom Turning. Don't get me wrong, I know how to bottom turn, it's just here in Shonan, Japan, there is just no room TO bottom turn.

That guy in the last photo with his shortboard is in for a treat....

Most of the people with shortboards, stand in waist high water facing the wave. When the longboarders come at them, they suddenly spin around and throw their chest onto the deck. If not, they lift up the board with both hands and pierce the nose of the shortboard thru the lip of the crashing wave. Sometimes it feels like medieval defenders angling their spears at you as you charge down on your horses

When I see pics like these, I don't understand if it's an event, a special day of some sort, or normal random surf day.

Can you please contextualize them?
