I don't get why surf a shortboard on tiny waves

My local break is super crowded. During the summer people are surfing shortboards when the wave is 1-2 feet. You get about 2-3 seconds of unbroken wave and it just closes out or that a bunch of kooks in foamie and funboard just drops in on them. I'm just puzzled because they are good surfers, much better than I can surf. What is the fun to that?

Why not just grab a longer board and sit on the outside? I think my break has 80% short + funboards. I'm the few that is on a longboard and they are surprised that I'm catching all the waves.

Often shortboarding in unfavourable conditions is about refusing to see reason beyond fashion and cool!
Take note of how many beginners argue to start on short boards.

Become a smorgasboarder, choose the suitable board like a golfer chooses their club!

Look over the lineup any day and see the fashion victims whining about how they can't surf this stuff .

I would assume they are practicing maneuvers like floaters on closeout sections. Or they suck.

They probably want to learn to ride a shortboard and don't really care to learn to longboard. That's why I don't ride a longboard. Some people want to cruise along and have an easy time surfing. Some people enjoy being challenged. I like being challenged but then I do that without a crowd.

A shortboarder explained it to me once, "Riding a Longboard is like driving with the parking brake on".

worst analogy ever, since the longboard reaches and maintains gliding speed much better than the shortboard

waist high on a shortboard can be fun if it's not mushy

Fun is a relative thing. What is fun for me most likely is not fun for you.

yeah, TBH I suck at this surfing thing so I need perfect waves, not too big though, to have a decent ride
