It’s a Volkswagen so that’s the engine, the things is a swing down Schwimmwagen propellor. Serious amphibious equipment, top speed on road down hill 70kph.
Water speed not sure but not up to planing speed, if the propellor fails tractor tyres on some act as paddlewheels, and of course the wooden paddle.
Yahoo cowabunga

Prop driven water speed is 6 mph. Only forward is possible with prop because the power take off (PTO) is straight from engine crankshaft. The 3 tooth mechanical union between the PTO drive shaft and prop drive shaft is simple and cool.

Reverse water direction is possible with paddle or running heavily treaded wheels in reverse.

Ferdinand Porsche is one of the chief designers of the Schwimmwagen.

I

Yes indeed well spotted, this was part of a 5 lake Pfingsten Tour, our home lake Attersee, Schwimmwagens at Mondsee, the Wallersee, Lunch at Wolfgangsee at St Wolfgang, Schnitzel no less, the past Pipeline surf spot down the Ischl and Traun rivers along the Traunsee and back to Schörfling on the Attersee. Enjoying Post glacial parallel glacial valleys and lakes. :D

As it has been forever,VWs remain the iconic surf vehicle!
