You could tell that guy was in trouble literally from the first paddle he made. What was he thinking?

I've never surfed in Uluwatu, but from the Youtube guy's other videos I guess there's like a cave or tunnel you have to paddle out of and back in to. How's the guy going to make it back ?

I haven’t surfed there either (I think jaffa has) but have been there and had a look. It’s all cliff but for a cave (gap really) that is a little inlet with some stairs going down. You can see from the video you posted that there is a strong sideways current - the waves break over the reef and then the water zooms sideways in order to get out through a gap in the reef a bit to the right of the entrance.

So to get back in you need to either paddle back into the cave (but you have to paddle from out in front - you can’t hug the shore and paddle against the current) or let yourself drift down to another small beach about a km away, where you can scramble up the cliff.

For someone who clearly can’t paddle at all, it’s not the best location.

Gotta love that YouTube channel, I watch all the time! Guy is honestly lucky he couldn't get out.. humbling struggle back in, but good lesson to learn.

The Ulus cave, a real challenge, dry at low tide with a walk across the reef, high tide you wade and paddle within the cave and emerge to an area where on the right hand side of the the are huge coral head boulders and cliff boulders, there is a strong current out on the edge of the reef and a sweep towards the boulder field so good paddle skills are necessary.
On bigger days getting back into the cave requires good timing, miss the opening and you become engaged in a current drama that puts you at risk of being smashed among the boulders.
Several big days I have had to ride the current north to a series of beach that have ladders up the high cliffs climb them and walk back along the road to the uluwatu warungs. Happen s to many
I watched the video, that guy would have come in from the boulders cut up, you can see each successive wave pushing him towards it.

After that session, he will come on the forum and says the board is too big. He needs something with less buoyancy and smaller. He claims to have caught the best wave of his life and he was shredding it. Making all those tight turns off the lip.

Not too far from the truth. I actually saw him do a Thru the Lip 180 and floater back down into the flats

He is still applying limejuice or iodine to the full set of coral abrasions he is going to have.
