Dick Dale, Guitar Legend who pioneered surf rock, dies aged 81 after lengthy battle with multiple illnesses

Dick was 81 years old and survived by longtime love, Lana, and son Jimmie.

His incredible career spanned across six decades, with his hit 1962 song Misirlou picking up a resurgence after Quentin Tarantino included the 'masterpiece' in Pulp Fiction in 1994.

Dick was cool because he was not only a pioneering surf musician, he was also an accomplished surfer. When he made surf music, it was experientially-based.

The photo shows the album cover that started it all! Do you have this LP?

What’s an LP?

My dad, who was neither a surfer nor very cool (thought the Rolling Stones were hooligans and let’s not get started on the Doors) nonetheless for some reason had a cassette of Dick Dale that I listened to a lot in my primary school years. I liked Ghost Riders in the Sky

My parents had a Motorola system like this. Most of the time it only played Broadway musicals (OOOOOOklahoma) but I was allowed to use it for special occasions.

It had a "state of the art" record changer that would drop one disc on top of the others when it was time to play. So cool! We never worried about scratched records.

dtc dude don't tell me your too young to know what and LP is? LP for any of you youngsters stands for long play(ing). It played at 33 revolutions per minute as opposed to 45 rpm or 78 rpm which were the other speeds records played at so the slower speed meant it played longer. Well I must say that it is sad to see him go. But that said back when "surfer music" came out, none of the surfers I knew were into it. We all thought it was corny and "Hollywood" fake surfer music. But I guess it turns out we were wrong about that as some real surfers used to like it. I guess that my tastes have changed over the years and I can now tolerate or even enjoy some "surfer music". Oh and the Rolling Stones were hooligans.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

He was definitely more than Hollywood surf music. He had a hand in how Fender amplifiers were created, and Agent Orange did covers of his songs! Love DD! Sad day indeed!

Ha, I wish I was too young to know. But, no, was just joking. My first LP was probably a jointly gifted (to me and my sister for Christmas) LP of ABBA Arrival (Abba were HUGE in Australia).
