Surfing Waves

Anyone here surfed in Sayulita in Mexico before?
I have three days of surfing booked in for two weeks time and looking forward to getting out there.
Surfing and tequila, there is no way this is going to be a bad trip.

I surfed Baja in January, so it’s in the ballpark. I keep the locations in my MSW and Surfline apps, and the waves are good almost every day. I don’t know anything particular about Sayulita, but that area of the Pacific/Mexico seems to have decent waves and offshore wind ALOT. Have fun, report back!

I was there over Christmas. I preferred slightly downcoast maybe 10 min to surf LaLancha. Nice beach break. The main breaks right out front of town can be fun - crowded but fun rides. Lots of beginners.

Sayulita is a crazy tiny town packed to the rafters with humanity. It’s fun, surreal but for me a little too much at times. The narrow strip of beach is jam packed with vendors, families, tourists, food carts, etc....

You can easily visit other areas for a more relaxed vibe if you need to escape the constant party that is Sayulita.

Boards are cheap to rent. Lots of options in town. I enjoyed the market on thursdays where I had some fantastic food.

But maybe that’s what you are going for?

I already checked and wildmex do a shuttle to LaLancha, I will probably hire a board from them too, they dont seem too cheap to me, $35-$40 for 24 hours but they have some nice boards like the Hypto Krypto and a few firewire boards, I was going to book one to make sure I got the right size but do you think I can just choose when I am there?

Of course it depends on the swell but i read that the waves are generally more mellow and good for longboards or you can still ride a shortboard?

I also heard it can be a crazy town but I am hoping if its not spring brake or Christmas it will be a bit better, never one to say no to a tequila though, just hope I dont have too many to mess up the surfing

I actually hired a surf dude (that sounds dodgy) from airbnb, not expensive $30 and he is picking me up in a van and driving me to the quieter spots so that should be cool.

There are a lot of boards to choose from in town down by the beachfront. I guess it depends how picky you are. It was small longboarding waves when I was was there, and I'm no expert - so I was fine just grabbing any ol' log that looked decent and had a blast.

I think I was finding boards for about $12 CAD per day.

Yes, I was there over Christmas so the town was going off. It may be a tad mellower at other times, and by mellower I mean you can walk through town with a board under your arm without being a menace to the throngs of people on the streets.

The whole area is mostly shoulder high surf, with occasional better stints. It's tide specific, so there might be no surf when you check it and great surf later. Fund endless waves most of the time

If you want really good surf there are two surf trips available from Punta Mita, only by boat. Both at the tip of the point so it catches more waves than anywhere else around:

1) El Faro: a long wave that breaks along the point,
2) La Bahia: A rock/reef break that break steeper and can occasionally barrel.

Both are about $50 by boat up to 3 people, so find someone to share the cost. They are only a few miles away but there is no walking access. I recommend you go early before the wind picks up after 10am

Sayulita is a great break, long rolling surf with a great shoulder. La Lancha is a bigger spot than Sayulita, and it has a two main break, the best is near the cove to the right of the entrance. Also a great spot is Punta Burros, but it's more tide dependent than the others. San Pancho is supposed to have great waves, I missed the swell but was told it was good.

Thanks a lot for those very helpfully tips, hiring a boat sounds like fun, i'll certainly try do that, I'll research all those other places you mentioned too.
Shoulder hight sounds fun, looking forward to it even more now.
