Longboarder looking for a surf skateboard

Hi guys,
I just started out surfing, ride an 8'6 which is pretty amazing. Have only been surfing for 7-8 months now and the waves are pretty bad where I live, mostly small windswell from the sea, so its restricted to longboarding which i happen to love.

I am looking for something to fill the gaps in between surfing which will also kinda transfer some skill to longboarding. I saw the movements on the carver skateboard look a lot like something you would do on a shortboard with surfing. Is there any difference in the type of skateboard/carver/smoothstar one can buy to practice wide carvs/turns as one does with a longboard?.

Thnx a ton guys! :woot:

Ultimately, any skateboard can be used to improve balance and carving, but surfskates like the Carver and Smoothstar allow you to make tighter, surfier turns that translate for shortboarders and longboarders alike. I have a Carver with the CX trucks, but Carver also makes the C7 truck which apparently produces a wider, more flowing arc that probably offers more of what you're looking for.

The other thing to keep in mind is that skateboards with a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear truck) will produce a more drawn out turn than ones with a shorter wheelbase. For example, you can check out the difference between these two, which are meant to simulate a longboard and a mini sims respectively:

and

I know some other guys on here have tried a few different surfskates, so they might be able to offer more insight, but I hope that at least gets you started.

Just get a Carver. The basics for turning a short board and a longboard is the same. That's the HOW. It is the WHERE and WHEN you do the HOW is what differs between Short and Long. A Carver will help you flow/transfer from rail to rail.

But if you're talking about Walking, Cross-stepping and Drop-Knee turns, then you can get a Hamboard.

Fast forward to 1:35.

If you're talking about doing big flowing curb to curb drawn out carves, then I'd recommend a board with Gullwing Sidewinder trucks.

Use any skateboard with very tight screws and stiff bushings on front trucks, and loose on the back.
You will have to raise the front wheels of the ground to make any sharp turns, which is the only realistic simulation of a longboard surfboard. :D

Ok, that was only half serious. Just buy any cruiser skateboard, cheapest you can get. It will help with basic balance and weight shifting.
Don't bother with fancy surf skateboards. It's like learning to drive a semi truck using a dune buggy.

What do you think about this one?

Check the vid at 1;20, seems like a good in between choice no?

It depends on how tall you are and how much space you can skate in. Bigger height and bigger space, Riddler okay. But I’d rather go with the Proteus or Mini- Simmons. ( but I’m short and have a small area to skate in )

Without trying to be rude, you don't need a skateboard, you need a big longboard. On small days take it out and go have fun, it helps you develop your paddle and the more you surf the better you get, no necessarily true of skateboarding. You don't need anything fancy, I have an 8ft minimal and a 9 1/2 ft longboard that I rarely use, but if the surf report says 1 foot they are my go-to boards. My buds use up to 11 ft, a little too big for my taste, but they do catch more waves than i do.

I wonder why nobody ever speak about the Carverboard (not the Carver).
I have both the surf-stik and the big one with tires.
I didn't know how to skateboard before and I've learned with it.
You only use it downhill and it is super fun and it helps with the leg-compression thing.
Lots of fun, easy to learn, great carving. :D

Maybe because the board you are talking about is called CARVEBOARD, not carverboard. The new company is called Streetboardz.
