How much do you weigh?

Hey, this may sound dumb, but Ive only been surfing for a few months and love it. Im 5"10 and weigh 10.5 stone, Currently surf on a 7"3 mini mal. I like going to the gym and am trying to get bigger but i dont wanna weigh too much because it will make surfing harder. I wanna progress down to shortboarding and i was just wondering at what weight do you think is ok to be using a shortboard? I was thinking if I get to 12.5 stone then I should try maintaing that weight, how much everyone here weigh?

Mate doesn't really matter what weight you are it's more your skill level that affects what's best for you to surf. Somewhere on the forum there's a pic of probably the biggest dude I've ever seen surfing and I'm talking fat.

Muscling up can also affect you dexterity and flexibility which in turn will affect your ability to perform on a wave. If you look at photos of the top 40 sufers in the ASP none of them are hulking muscle men just fit and hard.

The biggest factor with boards and weight is the floatation and paddle factor. More weight = harder paddling and less flotation. Your call but I'd love to be 20lb lighter.

I think Ghost has just about summed it up there, surfers tend to be lean rather than tons of muscle.

Do a lot of swimming - it's stamina you need more than power - power will come with good technique.

Moving to a shorter board is about skill not size, you see some really big guys riding shortboards.

Once you're comfortably up and riding on the mini-mal, I mean turning and riding along the wave, you can progress to a shorter board, but don't get rid of the mini-mal unless you have to! It's always good for those smaller days when you just want a laugh!!

if you put alot of cv work into your daily training routine you can get bigger and stay prety flexible, swimming is good, try swimming with just your arms and keeping our feet together and still as it helps with paddle outs

its what ive started doing and it helps alot


oh by the way im 17 stone and ride a longboard

used to be well built but due to more surfing and les (a lot less gym work) i become lean a product of the sport but iwantto get back to the gym and find a medium somewhere because being lean is not good for etherything .......
