I found a photo of my first custom board the other day and it brought a tear to my eye, here's my sad (and stupid) story.
It is probably my biggest regret that I got rid of that board.
I fell in love with this board in a shop in Croyde, Devon. I was outgrowing my popout and I saw it in the shop. It was an Ocean Magic 6'6 thruster. It had quite a bit of volume and was fairly wide. The deck faded from a flame red on the nose through to a yellow on the tail. I knew I had to have it.
I bought it and took it out that weekend. I couldn't believe the difference and I was flying.
Anyway a few years later I was in Newquay with my Uni Surf Club and I saw an almost new board in the Ocean Magic shop, it was pure white with the ocean magic logo on the nose - 6'8 and in absolutely mint condition. I saw it on the Sunday, just before we headed back to Newquay and didn't have the money to buy it!
So, 2 weeks later and we were back in Newquay and I'd scraped together the cash (just in case it was still there). So on the Saturday I got up early in the AM and went to the shop only to find out they'd sold it the day before. It was still in the window taunting me and now my heart was set on buying a new board.
I'd got someone to buy my board, so I found myself another - this was a great board, but I fear a little good for me!! 6'6 x 18 x 2, Instinct, Purple fins!!. I paddled it out for the first time in my heat at the Student National Championships and was amazed to see that only about 2 inches of it was above the water when I paddled. I failed to catch a single wave in my heat and felt thoroughly dejected.
I had that board for 9 years and had some great times with it, but it was shaped in S. Africa for S. African waves, so it needed waves over 5ft to get going. A luxury seldom afforded to me!!
I now ride a custom Mini-mal and it's great, but I think if I had kept my original Ocean Magic board I would be a much better surfer now than I am!!
That's my sad little tale.
Anyone else got a regret/ fond memories of a particular board?
