It Ain't No Freekin' Contest ! ! !

Postby WaveJunkie » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:27 pm

I just watched a program, Nat'l Geo. on surfing 20 ft. waves -- And they turned it into a contest. Some rabble of judges sitting on the dunes, with binoculars, and a spread-sheet for keeping score.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 28, there's the ASP Men's Champs. Teahupoo, Tahiti.

I suppose maybe pro-surfers need contests to make money and land commercial product endorsements.

But . . .

It ain't no freekin' contest . . .

"Step Into Liquid" -- Dana Brown, notes that the Polynesians had an advanced culture which had an advanced view of recreation. Having fun! No competition.

And there's a woman in the movie who notes, "The best surfer on the wave is the one who's having the most fun."

Form wise I suck. A complete newbie and bad at it all on the best days. But I have fun. Which makes me the best surfer on the beach. *G*

It ain't no freekin' contest. It's about having a good time.

Hey dude! I totally agree - just arrived home after a few weeks in Cornwall, England and man did some of those guys make it into some big competition. My mate and I love surf and most of the time wipe out completely - but do you know what? I love trying to get better. That's what makes it for me. Having an awesome time on the waves and loving it. Don't understand where all this mass competetion has come from. With you on that man, totally.

Just thought I'd lend my support...

"The best surfer on the beach is the one having the most fun."

-- Words to live by.

Sometimes I have fun just being on the beach. Not surfing, but rather cooking and having a feast for the crew who showed up.

Yep, amen to that.

In Step Into Liquid it was Keala Kennely who said "I'd say... The best surfer in the world... is the one having the most fun [then she laughs]"

The idea of contests is a bit alien to me and I don't really see how it can work.

Every single wave is different and therefore there is no 'level playing field' from which to start. I appreciate that wave selection is a big part of it, but LUCK plays a big part too.

You could paddle out for your heat and sit there in flat water for 20 mins waiting for a wave, then paddle in to one because you need a wave, then an awesome set comes out of nowhere and the guy behind you storms the heat!

I always tell people that the only real competition is with yourself. The struggle of 'crap I'm going to die, versus awesome overhead tube!!'

Yeah man I know, but I just wanna enjoy myself out there... think the way to avoid all form of contest is to go the waters where there isn't many peeps... went to Whips beach most days which was awesome... empty for the most part. Much better.

You're lucky to surf in Cornwall everyday... jealous I am!!
