Hello,

I'm planning on making a surfboard over this summer but am struggling to find appropriate materials. My first choice would be to make it out of wood, but am not sure what type of wood is best and where to source it from in the UK? I've decided on making a hollow board rather than a chambered, and it is the wood for the deck and bottom I cannot find.

My second choice is to use polystyrene, but again I can't find any that is dense enough to be sanded down without flaking off. I know buying a blank would be easiest but I want to make it completely from scratch myself.

If anyone has any experience with making a board from either of these materials and can help point me in the direction of materials I would be very grateful!

Cheers,
Ben

A couple of answers, a wood to investigate is Paulownia a very lightweight wood that doesn’t need glassing. Can be weight reduce by hole saw clambering and shapes well. strut and form shapes can be done tooBalsa is another wood, can be used whole, very water absorbing so needs proper glassing.
Polystyrene of various grades and cell size can be found in building insulation but the piece sizes are not entirely suitable for board construction.
You also need to be aware of the correct resins to use as your beautifully shaped board will be ashapless glutinous blob on the ground. :D
