How often do you remove your wax?

Postby Ratfinksurfer » Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:15 pm

I have yet to do a full wax replacement. Every year? Curious about how often most folks replace their wax. What's the best stuff to use? Sticky Bumps makes that orange stuff I think. I almost ordered the pickle on amazon. :?:

I do mine when the wax gets too dirty. Usually that means too much sand in the wax but last time was due to a tar ball (globule of oil) that stuck to my board
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I change the wax twice a year when the water is rising over 60F and falling below 60F. Tar getting on the board is a normal thing here, so I either scrape off a part of the wax or wax right over it.

To OP... since you seem to be in SoCal, I strongly urge you to make your purchases at your local surf shop as they are feeling quite a financial squeeze from the presence of e-commerce. Wax and the Pickle aren't too expensive even with a slight mark up, but any surf shop worth visiting will give you back in ten folds by sharing their knowledge and passion for surfing as well as making you feel like a member of your town surf community.

Hey salty dog, Thanks for the recommendation I go to my local surf shop. There have been multiple occasions now I've bought something online only to discover my local surf shop (Rider Shack) not only carries the item but has a better selection as well, (and yes a reasonable price). Just curious, what months does the water rise and fall below 60F? June and January? Yes, I'm in the South Bay LA

Around where I surf which is Ventura and further north, it's sometime in May and November-ish. I was told that when you see spots of bare deck from the wax stripped off for no apparent reason is the time to switch to a different temp wax.

Is it Rider Shack in Venice? I always change my wax there on the shop's holders. So, I change it when picking up my boards after the repairs
