Surfing Waves

Helo every1. i'm 15 years old and have jst spent a week down in nequay surfing and loved it . jst wonderin if i were 2 buy a board what i shud get?? i was using a 8ft longboard in neqauy but wud quite like to use a short board. How easy are they 2 use?

Thats simple... They aren't

The difference between a 8ft longboard and a shortboard is immense.

After a week in newquay (on what have been small, weak, summer waves), you'd find a shortboard really difficult to catch waves and have any control over even if you did manahe to stand up

pend a little time on a mini-mal or a funboard first.

ok then thanks for the advice. How long would you say you need to spend on a long board before you progress to short board or is it just when you feel confident enough?

If you're only 15, you may be able to get away with a shorter board - depending on how easy you found surfing. It really depends on how desperate you are to surf a shortboard!

My first board was a 6'4 popout and I managed OK.

It is true that they are MUCH harder to catch waves on and MUCH harder to control, but it can be done.

I'm assuming you haven't got loads of money to spend, being 15, so maybe you should look at getting a shortboard shape, but get one that's thick and wide - over 20 inches wide and over 2 1/2 inches thick. This will be buoyant enough to paddle easier and still turn quickly.

A mini-mal would be ideal though, particularly in this country. If the waves are about 2 ft you will have a lot more fun on a mini-mal than a shortboard. I actually progressed to a mini-mal from a shortboard and I surf much better now than I ever did on my little board.

Big boards are not necessarily beginners boards in spite of being easier to learn on.

i found it easy to get up and turn on the wave which is why i wondered if i could us a short board but i think the mini mal idea would be better lol.

i need some advice. i don't really know what stage i'm at. what do you have to be able to do as a beginer, intermediate or proffesional? in my surf school i'm know as an intermediate but i haven't been surfing long and can only turn left and right on waves and no tricks. so what really am i? and what would be the best board to get considering i'm doing quite allot now.
