Pepperdine is also really close, but their all expensive and that's kinda the extent of my knowledge. Cardiff has three main breaks, georges, the reef, and suckouts, apealing more to longboars most of the time, but if you can get the right tide and swell direction all three can create some nice barrels.

I don't know much about the pepperdine or swansea(never heard of it actually) but I plan on going to UC irvine, about twenty minutes on the bus to san clemente.

Im hoping to go to swansea Uni in september so maybe will see you there. I wouldnt know what Cardiff is like sorry, but I know that Swansea is a fair place to surf with a few good beaches. I know a lot of students in Swansea surf and it seems good enough there!

Kool - nice choice. I thought hard about all the courses and decided to choose Mobile Communications and Internet Technology, so im hoping get to do it. Swansea has good beaches and the best beach for surfing in Wales Ive been told is Llangennith which is like 30 min away from Swansea Uni. But choose whatever Uni suites u buddy

i think swansea looks great. Cardiff is a better uni but i think id get pissed off with how busy cardiff could get, and the closeness to the beach of swansea is irresistable :D

Ye, I know what you mean. Swansea Uni is more suited for surfing. Its ok to surf there but Llangennith Beach is by far the best - went today and it was amazing! Its not too far away from Swansea. Pick what Uni you want to for your course tho.

If you want surfing then either of those Unis would be good.

I was accepted at both - 1st Choice Cardiff, then Swansea, but I ended up going to Southampton because of a girl!! (the amusing thing is, she failed her A-levels and ended up at W. Glamorgan -11 miles outside Cardiff!!)

Anyway Llangennith picks up just about any swell that's coming in, but once it gets over about 6ft you might as well forget it unless you are a VERY strong paddler!! I've seen it breaking at around 12 feet but it was about 1/4 mile out to sea!!

The other thing about 'gennith is that depending on currents and tides, the water can be really dirty - I got a gastric infection from the lovely 'brown foam' which floats there occasionally!! Lost 2 stone in about 3 weeks - not pleasant!

The thing about the Gower is that it has breaks pointing in most directions so it's normally got surf somewhere.

Around Cardiff there are a few breaks, but again it's in the Severn estuary so it's not the cleanest water. The break that picks up most swell is 'Rest Bay' but it is either blown out or crowded when good.

However, Swansea is only about 1/2 hour from Cardiff so even if you went to the latter, the gower beaches are only about an hour away.

Cheers

Ah, the Llangennith paddle

Sorts the men from the boys!
Sadly, I turned out to be a 'boy'

Llangennith really can sort the men from the boys.

Pete Jones who runs PJ's Surf shop on 'gennith came 8th in a world championship event on Sunset beach in Hawaii, then flew home to Wales and bombed out of the first round at his home break in a little local competition.

When it's heavy the paddle will kill you!

Hey
I'm in the 3rd year at Cardiff and I love it. It's an awesome city and an awesome crowd here, wouldn't move for the world  I had a week-long placement at Swansea Uni last year and it sucked compared to Cardiff, Swansea the town is a bit of a hole and although it's nearer to the beaches I still manage to get in from Cardiff a couple of times a week. Rest Bay is easiest to get to from Cardiff, about 1/2hr away, usually pretty blown out or crowded though as the other guy said. Llangenith is spiggin' awesome, but it's quite a mission to get there from Cardiff, easier to get to from Swansea though. The water is ming pretty much everywhere on the South Wales coast, some beaches a little cleaner than others but not enough of a difference to choose your uni based on it.
Anyway I'd go for Cardiff just cos the city is so cool to live in. When it comes down to it you can get to the beach pretty easily from each uni so don't let that swing your decision too much. Judging by the age of your post you've probably already chosen tho - where did u go for?
