Hydration in the surf

Hi all,
What does everyone do about keeping hydrated in the surf? sure you can drink heaps of water before your session however I find when I am out there after paddling you end up getting pretty thirsty. I realise I can paddle in but sometimes it can be a mission.
what's everyones tricks or tips

Drink a lot before heading out and go in and get a drink when I’m thirsty.....usually 2h max in the sun is my limit.

I only surf for 30 minute to one hour sessions. If I am thirsty when I go out I am thirsty when I come in.

short of going back in for a drink of water? um... I don't recommend a camelbak if that's what you're getting at, nor do I recommend drinking sea water.

Don't paddle in catch a wave in, have a Drink, then maybe go out again, lack of hydration in the tropisch can mean cramps.
use hydration drinks before and after sessions, figuring out your needs and having shorter sessions.

I bring a hydroflask (no plastic) full of water to the beach. I usually don't get thirsty, but if I do I just go in. I will sometimes go in and run down the beach to go over to another peak so I don't really mind getting in and out. The one thing I always have on hand, though, is potassium. I carry it in my car if I forget to take it at home before I go surfing. I am prone to getting cramps so the potassium is my way of avoiding them. I often take an ibuprofen before I go surfing because sometimes I have pains/inflammation I want to bring down. I know that ingesting ocean water will reduce your electrolytes so I'm currently looking for a no carb electrolyte replacement drink. If there was a no carb Gatorade type drink I'd buy it. If anybody knows of one, let me know. It has to be no carb or low carb, however.

most supplement companies will sell an electrolyte powder, which often has no carbs. I've used the one linked below, not for any 'no carb' reason but I just added it to an existing order to try it out (for the same reasons as you - sometimes get cramps). It seems to work, makes the drink quite salty (and tastes terrible if combined with chocolate protein powder, but thats a different issue!). In any case, I'm sure your local/online supplement shop will have something similar

That's a good suggestion. I'm going to look for something like that in one of the vitamin stores around here.

50 : 50 water and fresh orange juice (or any fresh citrus) with a very small pinch of table salt usually does the trick gives you sodium and potassium... and it’s a lot cheaper!

you need to drink actual sports drinks with electrolytes, water won't cut it. you lose a lot of electrolytes through sweating.

I think if you wear a wetsuit then you need to worry about sweating or if you surf in really warm water but the ocean where I surf does a great job of cooling me down

I agree with most of your post. However, I don't think the electrolyte problem and cramps occur because of sweating so much as the amount of sea water you ingest. I know I often can't avoid ingesting sea water during my sessions. When you get too much sea water in you the following occurs.
I know I've gotten too much saltwater in me when my calves start cramping. The cells in my calves have probably pushed their water outside of the muscle cell and the cramp is the muscle cells saying they're not happy. (There's my scientific explanation

) That's when I know I need to get my electrolytes back in balance.

I do wonder whether there's a difference between treating a case of dehydration through sweating and dehydration through seawater ingestion. I would think you don't really need to replenish the salt in your body if you're dehydrated through too much saltwater. In other words, maybe you just need more pure water to dilute the salt already in your system and replenish the minerals, e.g. potassium, that you lost. If you're sweating like crazy playing tennis in the sun, however, then you probably do need to replenish the salt in your body. Anyway, maybe someone with better understanding can clarify the difference.
