Goggles?

Seems that I spend most of my time in the water wiping the salt out of my eyes and trying to get them to stop stinging. Also, I don't like being out in the full sun, makes me squint.

So I got some Speedo goggles, silicon, black with black lenses.

Anyone else use goggles? I've seen the boogy boarders using them a lot.

Just another reason why tea-baggers get dumped on as they do. The only less acceptable than wearing goggles would be wearing budgie hammocks.

Sometimes I do get abit sore just after fighting a shorebreak getting out and there's abit of sand/silt/salt floating around in my eyes, or sometimes in the early morn on a dawnie when basically staring into the sun at the approching waves.

I find the trick is to not blink too much & resist the urge to rub your eyes. The irritation then passes within a min or two. It's the blinking & rubbing that washes the crap back & forwards across your eye's surfaces like windscreen wipers on a car. That's what causes the irritation for me.

Glare can cause serious eye problems if you are in the water long enough often enough.

I have used all kinds of eyewear in the surf and find that sealed goggles are no good. . . . they fog and seem to affect balance. Ordinary sunglasses or proper surf eyewear which drains is best and can be a big advantage on very brght days as more wave detail can be seen (as well as protecting your eyes)

Unfortunately any eyewear is useless as soon as it gets oil wax or grease on the lens and this is a problem which I haven't cured.

Instead I use a Gath visor so that when I am not actually riding the wave I can get out of the glare by sliding the visor down somewhat like an awning, this works very well.

If the problem is just salt stinging your eyes then it could be that you are wearing a sunblock which isdissolving and getting into your eyes.


You won't find me saying anything bad about boogy boarders, they are surfers just like the rest of us.

Nope, no sunblock. No sun. *G* Northern Oregon coast. It doesn't get sunny most days. Also, sitting outside in the EVENING or afternoon is when you're staring into the sun. This is Pacific, looking West.

I swim a lot in an indoor pool and wear goggles there. Fog and leaks are not a problem with the right goggles. I use a Speedo silicon frame and black lenses. Also a fog application.

No grease, sunblock.

The boogy-boards use goggles. I have a pair, but haven't tried them in the surf. Jeez, my eyes sting in the Pacific salt water.

guys I had the same problem but I have just found some sunglasses that are perfect for surfing - check out my no more red eye post on sales of accessories.

Can't wait to try mine out when I go to Hossegor in 4 days! Last time I went surfing and it was sunny I ended up burning my face and had white lines in my forhead where I had been squinting - not attractive!!!

apparantly not - loads of testimonials from surfers saying they survive core wipeouts!!! Guess I will find out!

I remember seeing a vid with Gerry Lopez wearing some at cloudbreak (Endless summer II perhaps)
If you can wear them at cloudbreak the average surfer should be ok.
