Stickers on your surfboard

Hey everyone. I am new to this forum and have just taken up surfing. I have a 7"3 Mini Mal Bic surfboard. I was just wondering if there are any stickers suitable for sticking on your surfboard to make it look a bit cooler. I do have some billabong stickers from a surf shop but i know they would just come off in the water. Are there any special stickers to use for boards?

Happy Surfing :D

You can't get stickers to stay on boards.

FACT!!

Short of glassing them onto the deck I can't think of how you could do it.

Plus there is one thing you must remember. It's not actually about what your board LOOKS like!! The fact is it's a BIC and everyone will know it immediately.

Concentrate on SURFING better rather than LOOKING better!

If someone comes carving out of a barrel and into a big floater in front of me on a BIC, I'm not going to think, 'his board looked a bit crappy' but if someone has an awesome looking Al Merrick thruster and can't surf to save his life - I'll think he's a bit of a fleshin' idiot!!

Cheers

Sinista

I totally agree with what you are saying. I was just wondering if you could get stickers to stick to your board. I would prefer to be a good surfer with a crap board rather than be a rubbish surfer with an awsome board. Believe me, thats why i chose the bic 7"3 and not a stunning looking billabong shortbaord.

I have decal transfers from the surf shop. They're some sort of vinyl printed on a clear sheet with a paper backing. You peel off the backing, place the decal on the board, smooth out the air bubbles, and peel off the clear sheet.

I have some on my board (a Hibiscus), on my kayak and on the bumper of my truck. These are the same sorts of decals that mfg.s put on boats etc with their shop name.

The smaller the sticker the more chance you have.

I had a big T&C one back in my younger more impressionable days, I tried everything - waxing them on, even melting it on, but 7 stickers later I gave up!!

If you take your time, make sure the board is clean (clean clean clean) and dry, and you don't get any air bubbles in there and you give time for it to set, and the edges aren't frayed, but stuck and sealed well, then you shouldn't have too much of a problem with the sticker coming off for a good while.

We used to sticker our boards up all the time as groms.

When you stick on your sticker, and flatten out any air bubbles, put some clear nail varnish around the edge of the sticker creating it watertight. My friend did it and it never came off.

spanky69 do you just do your own designs on actual surf stickers? I've been trying to find the big Volcom dimond sticker for my shortboard. I've seen them on ebay but they are way over priced £10 for a sticker

Is there a way to keep the sticking on for a long time? Once I fix my dings up I want to put sticks where my dings are located so it dosn't look half as bad :? .

Hmmm, the stickers may make it look even worse if your repairs arent perfect.

Magic marker and a stencil should be a good alternative to stickers, plus you can personalise it and make it any size you want

THERE IS A WAY TO KEEP YOUR STICKERS ON YOUR BOARD!

i did it for my kitebaord and surfbaord :D

step
1. clean area you wana put sticker on and put your sticker nicely over that area.
2. rub wax over it.
3. take a hair-drier and heat up teh area you just waxed
4. wipe off any wax you can
5. enjoy your stickers bond. the wax goes into teh cracks taht are formed from the edges of the sticker.

i found thsi out by accident and joke. i put wax on my tip of the surfboard for fun and it melted down to the sticker one day, leaving me witha strong bond without any edges works like a CHARM!

On my short board have an ocean & earth sticker, some deck grips and repair tape, all have been through 20ft Hurricane Hossegor (France) and loads of handling and stuffing into board bags and laying in sand and so on - no problems. I guess the good stuff lasts and the poor stuff falls off.
I do scrape the board clear of wax and or grunge first, pour just off the boil really hot water over the surface to remove any extraneous salt and just place the sticker/grip on when totally dry - sticks like limpets I have found.

You can see them in my avvy actually - the sticker is the yellow up on the nose, the grips are, well obvious and the repair tape is on the rail - can't see it really.

One of my mates glassed 2 "L"-plates onto his board, got some very strange looks paddling out onto reefs. Got him a bit of extra room in the line-up also.

Back in the 60s and and I'd been surfing since 1958 it was required that you 10 Shillings to register your board and was only valid for the named beach or council district. A required and hated sticker.

Now a high prized collectable especially if on a board of the same vintage.
