Surfing Waves

I'm just a beginner and i'm looking for a board to buy. I found a few and i need some help deciding. I'm about 5' 10'' and 133 pounds. here's what the guy has.....


7'2" Kazuma Hawaii $100.00 tri fin


6'10" Local motion $150.00 tri fin



He says that in a week he will also have an Al Merrick 7'4" big gun in perfect
condition for $250.00.

What do you think?

mmmm tough decision, i'd go with the local motion personally

A beginner on a gun?!

try and go for somthing the same size ..but with more volume and a more rounded outline (if you get what im saying)

it will mak learning a lot easier fo your self to learn.....try and go out with a few diffrent shapes and get to learn what you find most comftable and have the most fun

dont get the gun if you're just starting, get a wider, longer, eggshaped board..guns are meant for bigger waves

Yeah listen to these guys. I know you're anxious and all to get your first board but if you buy the wrong kind of board then you will get very frustrated while learning. Go with something better to learn on before buying a "trickster" board. Buy a funshape or a longboard, you can always use it on smaller days even if you do move on to a shortboard in the future.

do you guys have any pics or anything of a board that would be good for me? and the height maybe?

That localmotion is almost identical to the one I had when I first started surfing.... And got absolutely nowhere

Then I swapped to a mini-mal before making real-progress. A couple of years later I went back to my localmotion, and discovered that I could surf on it, but it was a pile of dinged, cracked, waterlogged, repaired sh*te

(Thats not to say all LocalMotion boards are sh*te, just this abused example. But it was still too small)

You should be looking at a mini-mal or a funboard at the moment. Look at

for a description of different boards.

Some advice from a beginner, just wanted to say that those boards would be really hard to learn on. I tried a whole mess of crap before getting my 7'6" funboard. It was the easiest way to learn for me. Give it some time and check sites like www.craigslist.com and the right board wil eventually turn up for you, the same way it did for me. Good luck man.

Honestly you have to go with a Funboard!

The Phase One Funboard is hand shaped and glassed but you will find similar models as well.

Do you know what size funboard would be best?

I would suggest a 7'6" - 7'10" Phase One Funboard

The first board you posted has had the nose snapped off and stuck back on - you can see that from the pic!!

I would definitely look for a funboard or mini-mal. Go 7'5 or longer with plenty of volume.

Also, it depends how often you're going to get to surf. If you're not going to go very often and are likely to progress slowly, it's worth looking at some of the indestructable NSP or BIC boards, but if you want a board that will last you for longer while you progress, go for a custom funboard or mini-mal.

Everyone should have a mini-mal/ bigger board in their quiver, particularly if they live a long way from the beach.

There's nothing worse than driving for hours to find 1-2ft slow clean waves which look great, but your 5'10 thruster just can't handle!!

There's a beginners surf equipment guide on this forum. It's a link at the top of the headers when you get a page with a forum.

You're looking at "expert" boards for larger waves and surfers who know what they're doing.

Common wisdom on a new board for a new surfer is a long board, full width and full volume.

I got a Modern -- triple stringer, 9' 4" X 23" wide X 3 1/4" thick. Lazer technology these days is doing great things on a "pop out" shape. $500 US new.

Why get a pop out for $500 when you can get a hand shaped from your local shaper for less. The companies that make pop out overseas are not doing anything in support of the sport of surfing or the advancement in surfing shapes. On of my Phase One Surf longboards is only $450

in the same boat, have surfed maybe 10 times on 8', want to buy a board i can learn on but also grow into (ie wont be obselete in a month). i am 6'0 170 pounds and moving to nicaragua so will be surfing everyday. suggestions on board type, sizes, dimensions, etc?

If you feel that the Funboard may be too easy for you the next step would be soemthing like the Hybrid board I make. Shortboard tail with performance rails. The Phase One Hybrid model I design is pretty wide so it allows for stability and float. It is a great entry board into surfing for the motivated surfer that wants to get into shortboarding and does not quite have the skill yet....
