glassing a wavestorm

Postby irwinbee » Sat Oct 14, 2017 5:10 am

I have a wavestorm but only the blank, I would like to make a few minor modifications to it, rocker, better rails, make it a little less thick etc. But agian its only the blank, can I glass it or would it be a waste of time? Thanks

What is a wavestrom blank? Do you mean you have a wavestrom?

Rocker - more or less ?
Better Rails - foam really isn't that sharp when you think about it.
Less thick - will make it even more prone to flex, increasing the rocker or anti-rocker.
Etc. - pull in the nose for steeper take offs ?
add in FCS II boxes to accept carbon fiber Quad fins ?
add a swallow tail, cause Fishes are recommended, and since Fishes have swallow tails....

This creates the question in my mind; why? :?:
Have you ever shaped a board before?
Interesting concept sort of!

why? because I have it and I would like to not just throw it into the trash. I am not an expert shapper by any means. Ive read that the foam kind of sucks and its hard to work with but I can try, but can I glass it? Thats my question

1) It's honorable you're trying to think "green" , but sometimes junk is just junk. Is there anyway to ride it as is ? Ryan Burch rides a Softop core with out any fins.

2) You may not be an "expert" shaper, but have you actual shaped and glassed a board before ? Because if you've had before, you'd already know the answers to your own question.

3) Yes foam sucks, literally. All the voids in your "un-skinned" blank is just going to fill up with resin.

4) Not exactly sure what you meant by "wavestorm blank" but hope it's not Polystyrene. Polyester resin, which is commonly used on Polyurethane boards, will MELT polystyrene. Your board will just disappear in front of your eyes. You might want to use Epoxy resin.

I was not going to glass it. I was going to take it to a shaper for it to be glassed but it looks like the is no use in me trying do that. Thanks for the answers and the info.

A glasser CAN glass a polystyrene blank with Epoxy resin. But he will also say the same thing we said .................... WHY ?? If he's a rebutable glasser, he'll refuse to glass it.

The thing about polystyrene foam, if disintegrates its balls out and the structural integrity is based on the shell covering it several directionally different layers.
Youcannot even think Green if you are holding a polystyrene blank and then looking to have it coated with epoxy, only credentials it has is slightly greener than a PU and standard resin.

Consider agave pith or Paulownia timber, with paulownia you don’t even need resin, just a thin layer of linseed oil sanded back.
Agave you have to resin.

Paulownia you can do the whole spectrum of boards , paipo, alaia, loo, short board long board fish hollow paddle board.

Just spray it with plasti-dip? My wavestom has lost all the clear plastic layer and became slipperier than ever so I used a clear plasti-dip on it. I'm not sure it would dissolve the inner foam though. I don't think paying a professional to have it glassed is worth the cost or effort.

Wondering if you ever glassed that Wavestorm blank? I've done that. I actually fixed a broken one, adjusted a few things and put the same skins back on. After loving that board, I got a new one because the fixed one was retaining some water. The thought came to me to peel the skins off again and making it a 6'5" short board out of it and sealing it with 4oz glass, then putting the skins back on. It went well. I have pics and test videos. Let me know and I'll post them here.

That's cool. I do see a lot more materials involved in the construction of surfboards. Even though I ride a hard board, for the most part, I'd be willing to ride a well-designed board that integrated foam with other materials. Keep experimenting. You might come up with a unique innovation. I know if I were riding a kneeboard I'd seriously consider finding a board that integrated foam into the deck; my knees can't handle sitting on a hard plank.

This is a pad I would recommend for a kneeboarder, my shape and design board, the pad from The Cove Pad Guy.
There are other pads around too but I particularly liked this one because it was custom cut to my needs!
