I think most of the advice on this forum follows the shapers recommendations.

I guess that's one of the problems with a custom board.

I like the computer/machine made boards from brands like Firewire or Lost. Especially if there's an informative website and a lot of 3th party reviews on the models.
If u broke a board u loved u can replace it with a perfect copy, or if u want it a little different most brands offer a good range of sizes, until custom orders. (https://www.cisurfboards.com/board-builder/)

The bad news is even machine made boards are all different because they require humans for part of the job. Now if they can make good 3D printed boards they will be very similar

There's no perfection in the material world, that also goes for 3d prints. But I don't think 99% of surfers can notice those insignificant differences in machine made boards, don't you think?

I think surfers who aren't so good could ride a lot of different boards and think they were perfect for them or conversely not be able to figure out how to ride a bunch of different boards that others consider perfect for them. But still removing humans from the process can remove a lot of variation in the end product so that if you find a 3D printed board that is perfect for you then you can get as close to an exactly duplicated copy as possible which probably even the best surfers won't be able to tell the difference

I don't know much of the 3d printing technique, but I can imagine it will be hard to use different materials to manipulate strength and stiffness/flex with it. But maybe this all will be possible in the near future, I don't know.

It would be cool to design ur own surfboard at home on ur laptop (using the free software supplied by the printshop), sent the file to the printshop and have ur freshly 3d printed board home delivered the next day.

Yeah that would be cool but I don't really want to learn about surfboard design enough to do that well and figure someone else will make the design and offer it for sale or free and I will buy it or borrow it from someone more skilled at surfboard design. But it would be tempting to try out some design concepts I have. You know I am one of those surfers who can't notice the difference between a bunch of different boards. I think they are all good boards even though they are different designs.

I find it interesting the veteran surfers just want to go surf, while the newbies think " woah, wouldn't it be cool to ride a board that you shaped yourself ?!" If I had time to shape a board, I'd rather be out surfing too.

Another part of the article touches on surfing level. 99.9999% of the people posting questions on this forum list themselves as "Intermediate" or "Beginner-Intermediate". I thought more questions would come from "Beginners". It is refreshing when someone honestly says they're a "Beginner" and needs help.

As long we are fantasizing, u could imagine a software interface that takes care of that. Just rate paddling and turning on a scale of 1 to 5, put in ur body stats, and out pops the Hypto clone in ur size
