Hey, I'm real interested in the culture of surfing. You know, like the music, the slang, and general attitude and stuff. Also, is there a certain surf look?

Thanks

Edit: I sound so much like a kook it's not even funny. I apologize.

Let's see if I can sort this out for the kooks. *G*

You don't attend classes to learn about a culture. You either are a part of it or you're not.

Did I get that right?

Hmmmmm, I mean like the other day I was looking at a guy's short board (maybe 5' 6") and thinking he must really have it all down. And he says, "They sell short boards to anyone."

That make sense?

Get out in the ocean and suck a couple gallons of salt-water up your nose. That should bring you around.

*LMAO*

I dont think there's a common culture but rather a common understanding & respect amongst surfers.
Back in the area I grew up, surfing was regarded at the pastime of white folks
who listened to metal and the like. The attire was generally grunge.
Times have changed. People of colour have taken to surfing with passion and have contributed
with their "culture".
Surf culture isn't endemic to a race, nation or logistics. It's different everywhere you go.
Just because you surf doesn't mean you have to change who you are otherwise you'll just be fronting..
Be yourself and infuse your culture with surfing.....

please, don't do ANYTHING to encourage him.

Mind you, perhaps he's off building those three boards he claims to have just sold to some new shop opening in the UK, the ones that'll retail for 10K U.S.
Anybody know the name of it? Come to think of it, Roy's site is curiously devoid of business specifics...or even physical contact details should one want to order a board off him or do a background check as anybody ordering and part-paying (deposit etc)an expensive item would responsibily do.
He's not on the company register that I can see in this country nor does he appear to be GST tax registered...which one has to be to export goods.
So, I guess he'll read this and give us the name & contact details for the new shop...one of you UK guys (Jonny?) will have heard of em no doubt.

Speakin' of "culture" . . .

They got me a "wobbler" here at 69 posts. I'm on several forums -- and some have these "rankings." So I find that I post stuff just for a boost in the ranks.

That's probably "cultural" -- although nothing like puking. *G*

Roy eh? Hmmmmmmm . . . seems most forums have a "Roy." You know the name "Roy" comes from the French "Roi" -- meaning "king."

Clouds are burning off. I'm grabbing my stick and to the beach.

i say dont worry about the surf culture (clothes, slang, etc.) or whatever, just go out there and surf, have fun, meet people, grab a bite, drink, and pray for another day of good surfing :)

i dont think there really is a culture. u just go out and surf, and you single out the kooky people since some try to act like the shite, and really they use crappy foam or bic boards. to me, surfing is pretty territorial. i agree with WaveJunkie
