An unusual source offers 5 simple pleasures of surfing. Do you agree? Any to add?

Image
1. Dawn Patrol

This is BIG for me when I can pull my @$$ out of bed!

Image
2. Getting Hooted

Absolutely and I wish I deserved it more.

Image
3. Experiencing Other Cultures

I remodeled the kitchen and there’s no money for travel. Maybe some day.

4. Bonus Waves - Heading somewhere not expecting to surf and you score some fun waves?

I miss out on this one. The board's at home when I’m not expecting to surf.

5. Post Surf Grinds - In the same way that all food is better when you're camping, anything is tastier after you surf.

Hell ya!

And to the list I would add wildlife. In between sets I love watching dolphins, pelicans and seals.

I am not sure why dawn patrol was included. I have done it and got some good waves but I have had good waves doing regular sessions as well. I would say it is equal to surfing later in the morning or at noon or in the after noon. Surfing at night, now that's different. So I don't get it.

Getting hooted is great. It makes you feel good to know another surfer is stoked from your surfing.

Experiencing other cultures, it's not for me. I have gotten to know very well numerous people from numerous other cultures and get their perspective on their own culture which is good enough for me. No need to get Montezumas revenge, Bali belly, dengue fever, malaria, sleeping sickness, zika virus or whatever to go surf.

Bonus waves....ok well I haven't experienced this if there were waves and I wasn't expecting to surf I didn't have a surfboard.

Post surf grinds..... ok any excuse is good to eat some food :)

Wildlife....yeah my life is so non-wild these days.....Oh I see you mean animals. I would just say nature and leave it at that. Wildlife is just one part of nature but surfing puts you out in nature all the time unless you are on Kelly Slaters surf ranch.

My addition is surfing itself. What more do you need than surfing?

Dawn patrol - do that often due to better conditions, but I am a nightinggale. So before I am really awake, dawn is over. I love sunset more, but it means more wind at the atlantic.

Wildlife, defintely. I had a great session were we were accompanied by seals and porpoises and enjoied that quite a bit.

As a beginner, hooting doesn't happen a lot apart from my teacher and my daughter. Which brings me to my addition:

I would add kids. Being in the Ocean with your kids is so wonderful!

I'm a dawn patroller....for me it is special....magic is gone by 8am as the wind sets in. Less people, less wind, better sun conditions, can be done before work any day of the week.....all positives.

I hate hooting....harshes on my mellow....

I'm a bonus wave taker.....have to go to the mall? Go grab a few before heading on. Always have gear in the car.

Who doesn't like to grind! :)

Oldman Surfer: I am not sure why dawn patrol was included.

For me, the simple pleasures are the colors in the sky, the glassy waves and the absence of people.

Good call. There’s a surf camp at my break and its fun to see the pure joy when kids catch their first rides. Also there is nothing like hearing children’s belly laughs. You can’t help but smile.

Your avatar says it all. I’m jealous of how you can surf before work. To be in the water at sunrise I have to rent an AirBnB or get up at 4am to drive.

For a while there was only a curious gull that followed me everywhere I called him "Mine."

Seeing wildlife close up is great. It always makes me smile when a seal pops out its round head and gives me a curious look.

I'd love to go for dawn patrol often, but I'd be the only one out there with no one in or out of the water which may not be the smartest thing to do with a the shark encounters happening in Southern California this year.

I love sharing a wave with my kids, hooting for their success, me wiping out in front of them... It feels good to feel more connected to them as they through their teen years.

But the best one for me is: leaving the daily grind behind as I paddle out back so I can feel the waves... priceless.
