co-designing a custom

Hey guys

Long story short, but I went to buy another sup as part of my quiver and ended up talking to the guy in charge of the company about some of his models. After reviewing some of the tail widths, I suggested that 22" wide and flat rocker was way too much for a performance sup and that dropping 3-4" would give it a lot more hold in bigger nz waves.
We begun talking design concepts and I gave him my thoughts on a new model that I thought would really work. He was stoked with my suggestions and offered 40% off new boards and free testing on prototypes!

I've suggested a hybrid with similar elements to the starboard 8'5 pocket rocket (blue one) but with performance tweaks.
We're looking at cutting in to the nose a bit but still leaving it semi full. Adding a touch more rocker. Reducing the width from 30" to 29" or 28.5", hardening up the rails a bit and making them a bit lower and keeping the tail width about 18".
We're also playing with the idea of the diamond tail as similar to the sunova speed instead of the rounded pin.
Likely to be a full single concave with a little vee out the tail.

The idea being a board that still has stability for chop / wind, but with a bit lower volume for performance and turning ability.
If done right it should be a pretty versatile board for NZ / Aus conditions.
I think he's looking to make an 8'3, 8'7 and 8'11 size at the moment.
Will give more updates when I see the shaping sheets etc.

Haha it will be hard as I'm still not allowed to surf yet from my archillies injury.

Funnily enough I went out with a mate today who had a 10'6 longboard and my sup looked tiny in comparison
More funny was that he wa struggling with the small but hollow waves whereas my pro sup fitted in nicely!

Hey guys!
So I just came back from Europe and saw that the guy had launched my 'custom' sup board now! Details below.
The photos don't look like the rounded pin tail I suggested but all other details sound like what I had suggested. I think the volume is probably closer to 100l but will be interesting to test one!
I'm also hoping to go for my first surf again in 1.5years this weekend only custom 5'9 that I only ever got to use 3 times!

So the first trial boards have been made!
We got both a diamond tail and rounded pin for testing!
I'll be getting the 8'3 x 28 x 4 diamond.
We've tried to apply some of that hypto krypto essence but with more traditional performance. Soo, fuller nose and straighter template up front for stability and paddling but really pulled in the tail and added a semi-continuous rocker throughout the board. Single concave with slight vee out the tail. This also mimicks my custom 5'9 I had made.

First guy in the states received the trial and reviews are pretty damn good. I'll be getting mine in a couple of weeks.

I don't know much about SUPs, but it does look high performance!

And from the reaction of your first costumer it probably rides as it looks :) . Are you going to use yours with a thruster set up?

I would suggest a design change and put a 2ft hole in the middle of the deck with the intention to assist fellow surfer in beating back SUP infringements.

Seriously....you can surf now, leave the dark side and live the life of the righteous!!! :)
