yea.. currently i have a funboard. Im learning pretty good, but soon I will need another board because i wanna learn tricks and so on..

Anyway I always wanted a fish, fits my little crumbly new jersey waves nicely, but how are fish (im talkin retro twin fin not no hrybrid) with speed and tricks.. Because I also like shortboards and they will be better for when the waves pick up with a storm right? and they can do good in small waves too right? And i think theyre gonna be a lot better in helping me with tricks and harder maneuvers..
Well anyway, i have a feeling when i buy this new board its gonna be expensive, should I buy it with the money i would get if i sold the funboard (beautiful board with nice blue paintjob) or should I keep the funboard since its my first board and it would be nice to keep it. Because Id like to build a quiver but whats the point in having a funboard with a fish? You dont really use a funboard to walk on, and u use it on small waves but thats what a fish is for.. so i could see keeping it if i got a shortboard so i can use them both for the appropriate waves...

well anyway sry so many questions and writing, please help me out tho. So much thanx to anyone who helps with anything

if you cant ride a shortboard yet, dont get a fish. But once you get a shortboard down, then a fish is an awesome choice for small waves. And yes they are very fast. Oh yea, definitley get a retro twin fin fish if and when you get one.

Never let go of a good board!

Funboards often work when a fish or a shortboard wont. If its too big for the fish, but not clean enough for the shortie, then my funboard gets used

As for fish vs shortboard, I find my fish easier to ride, but swap to the shortboard when it gets over chesthigh.

So get both!

alright well heres the deal, my bro hasnt even been surfing as long as me but he can basically surf sideways everytime ... I just learned this as well. Anywho, he goes when the hurricanes come, and i want need a shortboard in order to surf with him (unless i can use the funboard, but idt so right?)... I just found a friend that would buy my funboard that i bought for 225 and hell pay about 200! Anyway, I like the board a lot, nice paintjob, but i have a job and with the funboard money i can get a really nice board!! Is this deal worth it? because people say theres conditions where youll use the funbboard but i dont think i would, once i get a shortboard i bet id use that no matter what the waves are because i like it more.. but idk maybe i would use it... idk just please help haha

I know it's a hard decision between the andy irons pro indo chip and the flea mavericks super gun, but I think you should go for the gun. Mav's breaks much more often than you get to go to indo.

ok seirously this time, keep the funboard and don't get a fish. You can do stuff on a funboard, you're just at the point in your surfing where you blame everything on the board, or you think you're at the point where you blame everything on the board. Keep the funboard until you can roundhouse cutback, floater, and get barreled. It may seem like it doesen't work well now, but once you get into some waves with power you'll see how it really works, and in big stuff too. It's not designed to be a small wave board, that's what longboards and fishes are for, this is something that's supposed to be fun, and apperently you're not having fun on it. So the whole time you're learningn how to do this stuff, save up your money from your job and then order a custom from a shaper in your area ( not rusty) who knows what the conditions are like. With a shortboard, you gotta learn all this different stuff, like getting up alot faster, having much greater paddling strength, being able to take off really late, and have much better balance. Even if you did get a shortboard now, you wouldn't really be able to use it much because you won't be able to do all those other key things. You'll probally start using your knee to get up, so you're gunna have to learn a new way to get up,m and a lots of other stuff. So, just do that. And keep your funboard.

I duno if a funboard would hold on double overhead because of it's thickness, but if you got bigger fins for it maybe, but it still might way outshoot the wave with too much speed, or get squirley. Practice taking off later with your funboard, it'll help you get up faster, but a shorty will just turn faster, be more responsive, and kinda just be looser. I normally take my shortboard out when it's usally about waist high and not perfect, or in faster not so perfect waves. Anything glassy I'll use my bonzer, but for people without bonzers I guess you'd use shortboard then too. There's not really like any defined rules, it's just kinda whenever you feel like using it, I've been using my funboard more latley because I've been feeling lazy and like the improved paddling ability.

Oh yea and both of those posts were supposed to be right next to each other, but my internet died so they wern't.

But if you don't get a custom, wider catches waves earlier and are faster but not as responsive, length gives better paddlling but slower swing on fast turns, thicker boards also paddle easier but get corky and squirley but work better in smaller waves, thinner is more performance orented, harder to paddle and catch waves on and paddle, but will be easier to control at higher speeds, and load better and give you more spring out of turns.

New jersey waves I'd get something short, fat, and wide, bigger side fins and smaller center fin, I don't know alot about new jersey in particular but if it's anything like normal east coast waves it's probally choppish and stuff I'd do a flat bottom with vee out the tail. Deffo a comp leash on both boards for minimum drag, and yea, there is really no rule about when to use each one, just whenever you feel like it.

But again I'd keep the funboard and start to try and build a quiver.

alright thanx a bunch for the help.. haha wow i never knew that funboards were fast and they would actually overshoot the wave, but wouldnt u just be able to cutback and get back to the power source? haha anyway knowing me i wouldnt use the funboard when i have a shortboard cause id love the shortboard so much.. anyway i appreciate the reply... thanx

You can ride any board on big waves if you have the balls!!

A funboard will cope fine with big waves - before shortboards came along people used to have to ride big-ass longboards in huge surf (see Big Wednesday!)

In fact, if you're talking about 'Double Overhead' ie. 12 feet plus, you'll need a longer shortboard.

Big wave surfers (tow in excepted) have to have longer boards because offshore winds blowing up the face of the wave can be strong enough to push you off the back - they need the weight to make the drop.

If you could get one board that would be ideally suited to everything - EVERYONE would have one!!
