Brand new made by Oceanside, it's a 7'2" pig fish, 21 1/2" wide, 2" 3/8 thick, nose 17, tail 15-1/2.

$480 out the door with leash, fins, wax, and a wet suit.

What do you guys think?

Yes, it's US bucks

So do you guys think I made a good choice for a beginner board?

I was going to buy a long board but I drive a convertible and wouldn't be able to transport it so 7'2" is the biggest I wanted to go.

That looks like a pretty cool board at a pretty cool price. Have you tried it out yet because I'm just about to buy my first board and the one i'm looking at is VERY similar; a 7'0"x20.25"x2.25" fish hybrid. It would be great if you could let me/us know how it surfs; manouverable, easy to ride, etc?

Well I just got in from taking the board out. It was definitely a lot harder than getting up on a long board but I think with practice I'll be alright. I was by myself so I got a lil bored. The waves were getting sorta big too so after getting worked a few times I called it quits. I'll prolly head out after work tomorrow.

I noticed the nose kept going under as I am getting up, I think I am grabbing the board too far up so I gotta try and work with the tail end of the board more.

Its a quiksilver spring suit, priced at 72 bucks. It wasnt part of a package deal or anything. The board alone was 389 w\ fins, wax, and leash.

I am in NJ so thats pretty much all I'll be surfing, besides when\if I take trips to costa rica.

Yeah, I got my ass kicked out there when I nose dived. I was reading some articles on the net and one of them said to start out with surfing white water and then move on to unbroken waves. I'll hopefully get out there again tomorrow or wednesday and work on it more. I'm gonna start out pretty far back on the board and try moving up a little each time. It said that if you are too far back you will not catch the wave, but too far forward you will get nose dived. Safer too be too far back than it is to be too far forward I guess.

yeah you both are too far forward on your boards. sit back a little more on your board. and when your paddling for a wave, keep your head low, like your chin is about to hit the board, then PADDLE hard.
Pop up, but like your doing a push up, on the center of your board. if you hold onto the rails, you can lose control and wobble and get jacked up.

and if your on a longboard, and you wanna turn, then get on the end of your board and really use your back foot to push the boards tail, and really dig it in the water to force it the way you wanna go.

Surfing uses your whole body. and it aint gonnnnna be easy

good luck next time goin out

Where do you recommend placing your hands while doing the popup?

On my buddies 9'6" longboard I used the rails and got up 3 of 5 waves that I tried, on my first day surfing too. I haven't gotten up on my new board yet, I only brought it out once so far. I would either get pearled or I would lose the wave as soon as I got to my feet. Do you think it is better to use your hands flat on the board like doing a push-up? Where on the board do you recommend placing hands? Towards middle, 1/4 way on each side, or outer edge?

where ever you're laying down, i recommend doing a pop up like a push up stance, but you actually push hard to throw yourself up almost. so where to place your hands? for good practice, i place my hands 2 - 3 inches apart from eachother in the middle of my chest.

I think it depends on each one's style. When I was practicing popping up I tried someone's advice to grip the rails for more stability but it didn;t work for me. I kept pushing to hard on one arm or the other, making the board tip over. Then I tried pushing up normally, with hands flat on the deck and it worked for me...

Also, you might wanna try out on the soup first. I didn't go for the clean waves until I was very comfortable popping up and maneuvering a little bit.

I have to say that I don't know if I grab the rails or not when I pop - I think I do.

I put my hands just below my chest at the top of my ribs, but that is on my board.

Every board is different and it will take a while to get the feel and balance of a new board so the only thing you can do is keep trying.

The board you got looks pretty good to me and I doubt you'll ever get rid of it, even if you progress to a shorter board - a mini-mal is always good for small days or a more chilled out session. Also it's good for lending your mates when you go out!

Cheers
