New Surfer, Needs Board Advice

Can someone help me with good board brand names and sizes for surfing in the gulf (ie Alabamam, West Florida)? I'm worried about keeping my board from sinking because it's too thin, too light, too ect. ect. I would really appreciate it. I'm going to get one in the next week or two.

If youve just started surfing get a longboard. As you progress, you can go shorter if you want, but you need something wide and thick for our waves. If you're ever in texas get in touch with Stephen Pierce (SPD) to get him to shape you a board, hes putting out some really hot s h i t right now.
Dont worry about brand names..Support a local shaper.
