Ok, let me get this straight.... You say surfing is opposite of snow boarding (which you're totally awesome at) but you think you can teach yourself....
HAHAHAHAHA.
Dude if you dont surf before your little band trip all ur bros will probably find out you cant surf seeing how you wont be able to even stand up.

All I can say is that you shoulda told your friends the truth. Surfing uses more of your front foot while snowboarding I heard is back foot. I have never gone snowboarding and I've only seen snow a few times so...I would tell them the truth and not try to establish a good ego because it will only hurt yourself more. By the way, where are you performing? Ala Moana Center?

Aloha!

I duno about the front foot back foot thing, when I surf I tend to use my front foot to trim, but really turn off my back foot, and same thing when I snowboard, just one doesen't have fins and the other does that's the real difference, you gotta figure out what your fins are there for and how to use them. Like the first time I go snowboard after a while I'll try to drive off my back foot to cut up a snowbank, but you can't do that because there's no fins to drive off of and you just slide around and get nowhere.

If you expect to be mr.cool surfer dude when you get to hawaii and show your friends up, then figure out NOW, and you'll be lucky if you can manage not to fall off infront of them.

I went wakesurfing a while ago and this beach invader kid who went with us was like "oh yea surfing, got that down ya know... bla bla bla, I can do it... whatever" Then we finally get out there and he changes his story to "Well you know I haven't done this in a while, might be a little rusty ya know?, might take me a few tries... bla bla bla..." First, it takes him like six tries to get up, when he finally has gotten up and needs to drop in on this two foot wake it takes him another few tries to make that, then he couldn't figure out how to turn and almost fed my board to the prop, and so I just wouldn't let him anymore, and sure, as soon as he got into the boat he was making excuses again, "Well that's alot different from the actuall ocean surfing thing bla bla bla..."

And the moral of the story is it's gunna happen to you and everyone's just gunna laugh if you don't figure out now, and they still will laugh, just not as much..

Maybe you could get some titanium hair gel, your abercrombie wetsuit(even though it's hawaii, the whole point of it is to look cool instead of like keep you warm or something), your matching surfboard, or if you could get a trip to half moon bay you could go to hollister surf camp and get it all down!

Oh hell yea, then after a week there they could go to americian eagle cortez bank, but when that opened someone would need a new line of big wave life jackets, new boards in some strange shape (who cares if they work if you didn't have one you wouldn't be cool enough to go there and drop in on anyone who doesen't have one), abercrombie would have to compete with the new life jackets and new boards by comming out with their new 'lite' line of wetsuits which only consist of a skirt made out of neoprene for girls and baggy as hell shorts for guys that have no functional purpose what so ever besides givign money to whoever makes their belts, and after that there could be camp three in the line at jaws, where everyone would need to see what avril levigne and usher are riding before they can buy their new boards, they could get new superfreak boardshorts or code STL's with some matching boxers for every day of the week, and then after they figured out that reef=sharp someone could market 'reef protectors' that consist of a helmet and a diagram to put your arms infront of your face and tucking your legs in, but who am I kidding, who's cool and wears protective gear, I mean come on...

I wouldn't complain much about the new 'lite' girls suits though...

That's going to be the next big breakthrough in surfing. That's only if you fit the weight limit, otherwise your going to just have a lineup filled with naked fat chicks who can't surf... Might as well just walk in to the gas chamber (abercrombie). Have you ever smelled their store? they like, perfume it or something...

In all seriousness, surfing and snowboarding are fairly similar in some ways once you are standing on the board.

BUT you have to think about paddling out, duck diving, timing your paddle for a wave correctly, not dropping in on people, actually catching the wave, getting up quickly...

... all before you get to anything like a similarity with snowboarding.

Snowboarding will definitely help with your surfing, I picked up snowboarding very quickly because I skate and surf.

The thing is Snowboarding is ALL about legs, but when surfing for the first time, your arms will be knackered by the time you get to stand on your first wave!

If you are a really strong swimmer and have a good natural sense of balance, I think you will learn quickly, but:

think i can teach my self in like one day

I think you are being a little ambitious!!

Cheers

new superfreak boardshorts

These new shorts would of course have a convenient key pocket (on the inside at the back of the left knee!)

As for the new girl's suit idea. I think Malia Jones should be paid a lot of money to promote it!

Now there's an edition of SURFER I would pay to see!!

learning to surf in one day is one thing, but learing to surf in one day in hawaii?

Anything less than two feet and all the turists are out, up to head high the groms take over, head high+ the locals own it.

Just hope for blown out mush.

Of course I don't live there that's just what I've heard, I'm probally wrong...

Pole vaulting is nothing like surfing....Besides, theres more to surfing then pole vaulting, both are hard, but theres way more to surfing...

Yes, i have pole vaulted before, and like i said in the first place, they are both difficult sports but there is way more to surfing. You can surf waves from 1 foot to a friggin 100 foot someday, there are tons of different tricks and crap. And seeing how you came to this site telling us that you told your little farmer friends that you could surf, but youve never surfed, i doubt you should even have a say in which sport is more difficult. Have fun in hawaii, but i hope it can even compare to all those sick breaks in nebraska...

Just because you can stand up on a surfboard occasionally does not make you a surfer. I'm sure any surfer will be able to see that you have never surfed before when you first give it a try, just as I am also pretty sure that an experienced polevaulter would be able to tell that you had only just picked up a pole.
