I've done it a bit.
When you are first getting up, u gotta be going pretty slow. Its easiest to go from your stomach to your knees, to your feet, and do it all slowly. Then jus pull urself up to where the wakes breaking and let go.
I think most people use a really short board (from what ive seen on tv they dont even look like a normal surfboard) but i just use any of my boards, i like a 7 footer on it.

dude he's the stub master
I shaped a special wake surfer that's about 4'2 and 18" wide, and then 1.5" thick singlefin (5" base x 6" deep). Works so much better than my 7er, and I added tow in straps so it can be used as a wakeboard too, or just keep on the board longer. I get up wakeboard style, I don't have enough balance to go from stomach to knees to feet and then drop in, but just my comments.
To get the best wake get everyone on the side you're on, surf the windward side, and get the driver to trim all the way up, and have him turn slightly towards you, it'll loose some power, but will wall up better. Have fun!
