Magic Seaweed App

Postby MidAtlanticNovice » Wed Jun 28, 2017 5:00 am

I was just curious if anyone knew what the [location] "hurricane" would be. For example, New England Hurricane. These locations seem to be pretty far off of land, so do they only break when there's a swell generated by a hurricane? Or just a really big swell in general I suppose, if those occur on the East coast... I sure wouldn't know haha.

Probably should note, this is on the Magic Seaweed app. I imagine they show up on other sites/applications though.

Appreciate the help.

Atlantic hurricanes begin in the Sahara then blow across the Atlantic usually roughly following the Gulf Stream ocean currents. They tend to veer where the current turns north, off the leeward islands of the Caribbean. Sometimes they continue straight, through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico....sometimes they turn north following the currents and if they make landfall can hit the continual US anywhere from Florida to New England....commonly when they turn north the energy is sapped and the storm downgrades while still well offshore.

Does this answer any questions? Everyone who has lived any period of their adult lives in the Caribbean is an amateur meteorologist where hurricanes are concerned.
