I can normally stand up when catching a wave but I usually fall off after 8-10 seconds. This summer I have almost 2 whole months where I would be able to surf 4-6 times a week. Would it be possible to learn to short board successfully in this amount of time? (I'm 5'11" and 135lbs and I have a 8' board and am planning on getting a short/funboard) And what size board would you recommend?
So from your above post dated May 8th, you been surfing for awhile now. ( like 3 weeks since ). As stated, you hoped to be on a shortboard this summer, but like most of the responses said, you need to spend more time learning the basics. But if you want to be on a shortboard "no matter what" .......... Even though most would recommend not going less than 7' ( even if you could turn your 8 footer ) .......... The volume calculators says for someone 5'11" 135lbs. beginner:
Firewire = 7'0" or 7'2" Addvance
Rusty = a board around 44 liters
Channel Islands = 6'4" biscuit 7'0" flyer 2 ( i left out the pointy nose step-ups )
Why not get a 7'6" Funboard ? Even that will be challenging enough to stay on.
