Old lightning bolt board question

Postby Aaronwhip » Fri Feb 17, 2017 7:54 pm

Hey guys. Let me start off with a disclaimer: I am a total noob. I'm just starting out and really know nothing at all. I'm going on my first surfing trip with a friend of mine next month. But I have a question. So I inherited a lightning bolt board from my uncle a few years ago when he passed away. Since then I've been dying to get it out in the water and finally have my chance but I've noticed that the tail is pretty worn out. Like it's been sitting up on it in a garage or something so the glass is worn all the way to the foam. What can I do with this? How huge of a deal is it and what would it cost to get it fixed?

Pretty easy fix to at least make it waterproof; making the 'point' look like the other side of the board might be a bit harder.

do you want to do it yourself? A surf shop can do it no problems; it's a feasible home repair for someone unskilled as well.

However that board will be virtually impossible for a beginner to surf from the looks of it (although the photos are a bit hard to tell). Too short, narrow etc. if it's your first surf trip then you would be much better off spending your money getting a more beginner friendly board than repairing this one.

Multiple answers:
1) You're a total Noob - Board is not right to learn on. Save fixing it to later.
2) You're a total Noob but still persistent on using it - you're going to break off the other side tip and break out the center fix box - do a cheap fix on the broken tip for now and do a real repair on both tips later.
3) Pay for a "all resin" repair - cheaper but stands out ( ugly )
4) Pay for a foam build up and fiberglass cloth "restore" - most costly and still wont match the faded rest of the board.
5) Do it yourself. Get some Solarez / Suncure UV repair in a tube, sand down the area and just glob it on to seal up the area with out making it come to a point.

Most likely not, but maybe a Craig Hollingsworth. Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley ( legendary surf judge whose son is now the head judge for the WSL ) started Lightning Bolt back in 1971. I've been lucky to know Jack since the late 80's even before I started surfing. Later in the 90's he gave me good pointers on surf competition.
