Surfing & Accutane

Postby FL1995 » Mon Feb 13, 2017 2:37 pm

Hey guys,

I have just been prescribed accutane for my acne and skin. I know it makes your skin a bit more sensitive but anyone else on it or used it before and continued surfing. If I wear zinc and apply regularly, can I surf on accutane? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The sun sensitivity caused by accutane is of some concern as is an overlay of zinc or other "sunblock" closing your pores and adding there chemical to what is happening with your skin.
I'd really suggest speaking further with your prescribing doctor, you might be lucky though hopefully one of the forumites may have been through similar.

I second the idea of consulting your prescribing physician. Hopefully you won't need it for too long. In China they are using something that would help but elsewhere may make you look like a kook.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2189877/Meet-Face-Kini-latest-craze-hit-Chinas-beaches-bathers-wear-masks-beat-suns-harmful-rays.html
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I'd be careful. I just saw a Netflix episode of "Curious and Unusual Deaths" where a woman was on a drug for psoriasis that made her sensitive to light (light therapy is a treatment for psoriasis) and after she had a tanning salon session she died from 3rd degree burns. The increased light sensitivity can get you into trouble obviously. Just as an aside, I had two friends who took Accutane in high school for the typical acne that teenagers get in adolescence; they both wish they hadn't now.
