Snowboarding is easier than surfing

Actually no and I suck at it. Anyone who snowboard here can give me some tips? I tried it two days ago and I'm still in pain from all the falling off and sore muscles. The instructor said I'm doing well because I got the balance from surfing. That is totally not true, I was worse than the others who doesn't have any experience. Simply because I kept thinking I'm on a surfboard and my instinct kicks in. I try to slow down by shifting my weight towards the back of the board which obviously doesn't help at all. Nor can I shuffle my feet. I'm like this kook who's feet is tied to the board and I can't do anything apart from shitting my pants when I go downhill.
I was okay at first because they let me snowboard with 1 foot tied to the board, as soon as I got both feet tied. I was like an anchor going downhill. My body just froze and I can't do anything.

snowboarding is difficult on icy snow or so I hear. So I guess that means you don't suck at surfing?

I don't know because the last time I was on the slopes they didn't allow snowboarding (except for a couple hours once a month on some slopes). But I can tell you skiing is easier than surfing by quite a bit. All I can say is listen to the instructor. I skied 3 times before I took lessons and by then I was figuring it all out anyway. I am not sure with snowboarding but with skiing the way you turn is very different from surfing. If you try to turn like you do surfing it slows you down and if you push the turn hard then it is how you come to a stop skiing. Merry Christmas Banz hope you get it all figured out

Never tried snowboarding.....have been skiing many times and it is definitely easier than surfing. Really enjoy skiing actually, haven't considered it for a long time; something to put in the schedule......

Surfing and Snowboarding have opposite techniques:
1) You lean on the front to swing out the tail for snowboarding
You put pressure on the tail and swing the nose for surfing
2) You carve to slow down and do nothing to speed up for snowboarding
You do not nothing and you slow down, but if you carve you pick up speed in surfing
My advice is to just scrub toes side all the way down a small hill. Stand straight up, both toes and full edge into the hill, release the pressure then regain the edge, then release. Your going straight backwards, no shimmy side to side. ( don't reach out to grab the hill, but your hands on your waist. ) Then when you get really proficient at toes side, try the same thing heel side ( which is way scarier ). But that will help you to carve to scrub off speed and learn to turn.
By the way, did they set you up surfer stance or duck feet stance ?

wkkk, I had to do the duck stance. I was learning okay until I got asked to strap both feet onto the board. That's when I started panicking. My body locks up when they tell me to carve to slowdown. My brain was telling me don't carve. I also couldn't turn really well, I resulted into jumping up to make a turn. I was also doing a few 360 because I overturned, the instructor was fairly impressed as I didn't fall from doing that.
Billie, I went to Mountain creek. It was 1.5 hour from NYC!

The instructor showed me that all I have to do to turn is put pressure on my front toes or heel and that's it.
The stance is front-footed, the more pressure you put on your front foot the more stable you are, and also, the easier to turn. It's the opposite from surfing.

I do find snowboarding easier as you are strapped in but the only way to control your speed is carving by putting pressure on toes or heels, it will just take time but is nothing compared to how exciting surfing is.

you control your speed by spraying snow using your backfoot, I still have trouble with that but look up youtube videos

Really? But I'm sure you go much faster in snowboarding? Plus you don't need good conditions for good snowboard. You just need fresh snow or even man made ones. I was hoping it would give me the same excitement.
Either way, I don't think I'll be able to master it. Especially when some of the moves are opposite to surfing. Plus it is a lot more expensive than surfing when you have to buy ski / lift passes.

I personally find surfing more rewarding because the slopes are always going to be in the same general shape where surfing is a whole different concept with always picking the right wave and trying to score a sweet ride and snowboarding is expensive. IMO

One thing that was the same for skiing and surfing was the weighting and unweighting during and between turns. I imagine that is quite similar with snowboarding as well

I was super depressed that day when I snowboard. I thought I could at least master the turns on my first day. I only barely managed to do it and most of the time it is luck. I think it is back to surfing for me... ski/snowboard is too expensive.
