Cheap alternative to Carver skateboard

Postby goatdonkey » Thu Nov 17, 2016 4:26 pm

Hey,

Does anyone know of a skateboard that is similar to a Carver or Smoothstar but is more affordable? I never skateboarded before but will be learning to surf in Indonesia for a few weeks next year and thought it'd be a good way to give me a head start. That, and I live next to an old airport which I'm keen to put to use with a skateboard.

I came across these:

Does anyone have any experience with them? Not much info online.

Cheers,
Scott

It looks like a similar idea....don't know how much exactly you save over the carver but I'd save and get the carver.....that board may be less expensive but it's cheaper in every way down to the deck sagging under the weight of the rider in the video. My carver is rock solid...use it all the time and it rolls smooth, the trucks have no issues, deck feels really good, wheels are a good quality and is a joy to ride in part because it rolls so smoothly......if you live next to an airport you may surf for a few weeks in Indo but your new hobby provided you get the right board may be skateboarding so I'd get the carver......anyone off to Indo from the UK should be able to put the extra bucks together.....do yourself a favour and spend the extra.

I'm not sure I can justify paying $250-300 for a first skateboard :/

I have the Atom Surf-skate which is a lot cheaper but I think it's been discontinued.

A penny skateboard clone with loose trucks should allow for some turns more like surfing.

Amazon has some cheap ones that are OK.

If you never skated before, I would also invest in some wrist guards. If you break you wrist/hand you might have to cancel the trip.

In addition to buying the skateboard ( which won't really matter since most beginners will just be going straight ), going swimming will be the most beneficial. Surfing is mainly paddling. Like 90% of the time. Not much of the time is actual riding. So go to the pool and swim swim swim.

My brother in law is very athletic....in his 40s but still plays soccer, is in a bike club, tennis a couple times a week, etc......he was over at the house and saw the skateboard and said he'd always wanted to try one.....literally never seen someone go from standing to flat on their back so quickly; it was like a cartoon, he put one foot on the board and the instant he lifted his other foot..............

Body protection is a good idea.

Thanks for all the comments!

Body protection sounds like a good idea...

I can't find the Aton board anywhere online. As you say - looks like it's discontinued.

Does anyone have experience with these Adrenaln boards?
