Higher wave count in bigger surf

Postby icetime » Mon Sep 19, 2016 8:09 pm

I noticed that every session that I go for that's overhead I end up having a wave count of around 4-6 waves instead of my average 10 waves or so per session in smaller surf.
Why's that? I don't hesitate when a set comes and take mostly the last wave of the set so I don't get pounded after my ride, maybe my wave count has to do with when I'm in small surf 3-4ft as soon as I finish a wave I paddle quickly into position and catch another wave in a span of less than 2 minutes though you can't pull that off when surf is big, volume isn't my issue really, I catch the waves I paddle for in bigger surf with no issue
How do you guys keep your wave count higher on bigger days(big in Morocco isn't really that big 6-9ft )?

Bigger waves come in at longer intervals usually. So there can be more small waves in a shorter period of time. Less time to paddle back out. I am more careful to select waves when they are bigger or more dangerous for whatever reason but will often go on anything I feel I have a chance to ride when it's small.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

True, I noticed in bigger surf atleast one wave of the set is a close out of doom
But yeah you have a point sometimes I've had to wait 25 minutes for a set to roll in and waves come in smaller numbers too, meanwhile in smaller surf I'd say every 10-15 min
