I watched an entertaining surf movie last night on Youtube. The movie is called, “Drift.” Full movie here:

Wikipedia says, “Drift is a 2013 Australian film about the birth of the surf industry in the 1970s. It was shot in Western Australia”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drift_(20 ... alian_film)
:surfing:

Not only was I entertained, but I’m pretty sure I saw our beloved Jaffa in a few scenes.
:P

I just watched it myself. Besides it seeming a bit pro Australian it was entertaining. At least they weren't saying Australians invented surfing

I remember having this in 2013 as an option to watch and closed it after 5 minutes of watching, wasn't into surfing back then, I guess I might give it a watch

icetime, hope these comments are amusing to me as they are to you. They are meant in jest. :P
kinda like saying:
"before I was born"
"before I saw the light"
"before all that ever was"
"before the day that time began"
:surfing:

Coincidentally, many Surf Forum regulars were involved in making this film. The film maker saved travel expenses by making all of us paddle to Oz, rather than fly. Sadly, most of us ended up on the film editor’s cutting floor. Here’s why:

Big H – surfed too well for an extra
Benji - surfed too well for an extra
dtc - surfed too well for an extra
Drowing bit by bit - surfed too well for an extra
Old Man – surfed better than the leading actors and actually won the surf contest, making the producer furious
Surf Patrol – completely wrong accent and always demanded hot tea
Kite Surfer – showed up with wrong board and some kind of parachute thingy
billie – too handsome, which made the pretty young actress want to complete scenes with him

I'm really at a loss to figure out how you can make a close to biopic about the Australian surf industry without being a little pro Aussie :?: :?: :?: :?:
If you watch any of the early Bruce Brown movies up to Endless Summer 1 you'll see the narrative treats Aussies as cornball yokels with suitable music to boot.
Any historically aware Aussie will know Duke Kananamo pretty much introduces surfing to Australia as he did in America although other Hawaiians had brought surfing to California previously.
Body surfing was introduced to Australia by a native of Vanuatu Tommy Tanna, possibly named from his island of origin.
Australians were not allowed to sea bathe during daylight hours until 1903 when the Editor of the Manly Daily challenged this ordinance by bathing daily.
1956 saw American lifeguards introduce the Malibu chip ( balsa longboards) when they came out for the Melbourne Olympic games.
We didn't invent surfing neither did Continental Americans (Christian Missionaries tried to suppress it ). Lay the thanks to the Polynesians on their many islands.
I can tell if you get my Drift that that was much like the nascent surf industry in Australia.
Take the debate a little further and see if you can see the videos,
Going Vertical
Chasing the lotus
The Fantastic Plastic Machine

Q. What is billie doing on another beautiful Santa Barbara Saturday?
A. He's watching surfing movies. It's all he can do because this work week beat him to a pulp.

Q. What's billie watching right now?
A. Another movie made in Australia!

The movie is called "Storm Riders." It features some of Australia's and Bali's surf breaks and many of Australia's notable surfers. The rock and pop sound track is entertaining, too. All in all, there's not much story and the production is early 1980's style and quality. Kinda fun!

You should dig up 'storm surfers' - it's on Australian Netflix (it's a documentary)

Ross Clarke Jones is an interesting guy...

That wipe out at 'ours' when he stood up in the barrel and the lip took his head was memorable. I also remember his tip for staying calm after a big wipeout - pretend you are in a nightclub surrounded by beautiful women and then there is no stress- in fact, you are quite happy
