1) first get a big bucket of balls since you need this before anything else
2) second remove half your brain because you don't want to think about it too much or you will decide it's crazy
3) ready to go :)
or do what Andrew Cotton does

interesting page - that graphic on the weight of waves is pretty scary. Not that I've ever been in anything above maybe a 20 car lip...

Hahaha yeah. I guess I have been out in waves with so many car weights in the lip that I never would have went out if I ever thought about it. :)

I can't believe they didn't include the Cortes Bank in their list of big wave breaks. That place is, in my mind, the scariest of them all. You're just out there in the open ocean. If they lose track of you out there, it's pretty much game over--not to mention that the waves are enormous.

I think this one is measured in Mack Trucks, not cars. Dude, got runned over.

Yeah Cortez banks is way off shore but on the other hand it's a seamount and once you get held down a long time it's suddenly gone into deep water again so it lets you go. But Teahupoo I hear at that size you almost never hit the bottom, there is a cushioning effect of all the water hitting the reef with no where to go but back up, I guess if you do no one will know because they won't be a big enough piece of you left to identify. I guess also it's the next wave you have to worry about but if it pushes you in far enough then it weakens rapidly and the jet ski can get to you.

I pity the surfer who blows the takeoff at the top of the wave and comes down with the edge of the lip. That's probably a remote possibility these days with all the tow-ins.

1) Open a Corona since you need this before anything else.
2) Fire up the internet TV when your partner is away because you don't want them to think about it too much and decide surfing is crazy.
3) Search up GoPro 100 foot waves

Ready to go :)
